STORM LAKE PILOT - Wed, Jan 4, 1871 - Died in Storm Lake Jan 2, 1871 at the residence of Mr William Reeder on Lake Avenue, Richard S Graham, aged 33 years and 23 days.
The deceased was a native of Illinois and came to this State in 1866, locating in Madison county, where he continued to reside until the spring of 1868 when he came to this county and took a homestead about 8 miles west of the lake.
The disease which caused his death was consumption, inherited from his mother, who died from the same disease. He was a soldier in the 45th Illinois Regiment, enlisting from Mercer county and was severly wounded at Shiloh in April 1863.
This is the first death (with the exception of an infant) which has occurred in Storm Lake. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was attended by a large concourse of citizens. The Rev Thomas Whiteley was the officiating minister at the house and at the grave. The place of burial was just outside of the city limits on the east.
