Death Calls "Lew" Metcalf, One of County's Best Known Citizens; Funeral Services Are Held Today.

Friends were grieved to learn of the death of L. J. Metcalf, a resident of Storm Lake for 62 years, who passed away at his home, 226 Geneseo street, Sunday morning about 2:30. He had been in ill health for the past six months and was confined to his bed four days before his demise. Death was the result of coronary thrombosis.

Funeral services are being held this Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 from the Metcalf home. Dr. Edward L. Gibson, pastor of the Lakeside Presbyterian church, is officiating.

Bearers are: William Cunningham, Guy Mack, Frank Lamoreaux, Don LaGrange, Guy Robinson, Storm Lake and Marshall McArthur of Omaha. Interment will be in the Storm Lake cemetery.

Native of Wisconsin

Lewis Jeanotte Metcalf, son of John Edwards and Clarette A. Metcalf was born at Hazel Green, Wis., July 25, 1857. Later he moved with his parents to Darlington, Wis. When about 20 years old he came with his parents, as pioneers to Iowa locating in Storm Lake. His father purchased six sections of land north of Storm Lake, and Lewis assisted his father in the livestock business. The Metcalf family, however, lived in Storm Lake.

Mr. Metcalf was united in marriage to Ada Talley and following her death he married Carrie Butler. She preceded him in death and later he and Belle Covey were married.

Dealer in Live Stock

Mr. Metcalf was engaged in the live stock [sic] business for about 50 years. He had lived in his spacious home on Geneseo street for 60 years.

Besides his wife he is survived by three children. Mrs. Clarette Jones, Storm Lake; Mrs. Florence Armstrong, Newell; and Roy Metcalf of Atlantic. Two sisters, Mrs. S. H. MacFarland, Storm Lake; and Mrs. Charlotte Rodgers of Long Beach, Cal. Two grandchildren, Robert Jones of Santa Barbara, Cal., and Jean Armstrong of Newell, also survive.

Well Known Thruout [sic] County

"Lew," as he was known far and wide, was one of Buena Vista county's best known, citizens. Always known as a square shooter, his dealings with farmers endeared him to them while his activities in behalf of a more beautiful and attractive Storm Lake won him a firm place in the affections of his fellow townsfolk. He will be missed.
