Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Jul 2, 1925 - Charley H McLaughlin, well known resident of Storm Lake for over 40 years and a member of the first local fire department, passed away at his home on Oneida street at 11:30 Tuesday, June 30.

He had been in ill health for the past year but was taken critically ill about two weeks ago. He was then taken to the hospital in Carroll where surgery was performed, hoping that he might recover. He was brought to his home in this city the next day. Here he was tenderly cared for by loving hands until his death. Mr McLaughlin has been afflicted with blindness for the past 20 years.

He was born in Mercer County, PA Oct 16, 1853. When about six months old his parents moved to Mercer, IL He grew to manhood there and resided there for about 21 years.

April 18, 1875 he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Foster at DeWitt, Iowa. They lived there for about 3 years after their marriage and then moved to Sac county. They came to Buena vista county and located in Storm Lake in 1884 and have since made this their home. After coming to Storm Lake he engaged in the delivery business until he was forced to give up his occupation on account of his affliction.

Three children were born to Mr and Mrs McLaughlin. They are Mrs Charles Gage of Binghampton, NY; Fred McLaughlin of this city; and Mrs Helen Decker of Johnson City, NY.

He leaves to mourn, his widow, his three children and four sisters: Mrs Bert Franklin of Schaller; Mrs A.L. Hyzer of Storm Lake; Mrs Richard King of Porter, MN; and Mrs F.A. Stone of Britt; two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mr McLaughlin was a member of the first fire company in Storm Lake and was an honorary member of the company. The fire company attended the funeral services in a body and three of the original members, Amil Joray, Bert Hughes, and L.C. Dean, acted as pall bearers.

Funeral services were held at the home Thursday afternoon. Interment was made in the local cemetery.
