Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - Feb 23, 1917 - A couple of weeks ago Mr and Mrs Ewald Mauser came to town to stay with their daughter Mrs C.H. Sanderman until their own house was vacant. They had rented the same three years ago and had gone back on the Old Homestead in Hayes township to keep house for their youngest son but as he was married this winter they now intended to retire in earnest.
Three years ago Mr Mauser suffered a stroke of paralysis from which he almost recovered entirely. Last June he had another stroke but recovered from it sufficiently to be about and was getting along nicely. A few days after coming to town he was again taken ill and though everything was done it was impossible to stay the grim hand of death and on Friday morning he was called home.
Ewald Mauser was born Dec 19, 1846 in Duesseldorf, Koenigkrach, Prussia. He came to America with his parents when but 6 years of age and they settled near Herman, WI. This was pioneer life in earnest as the Indians were all about that region at that time.
In 1875 he was married to Louisa Junkermeier and the two came to Storm Lake and settled on the farm in Hayes township, again being pioneers. On this quarter section which was raw prairie when he first saw it, they lived since then with the exception of a few years in Storm Lake.
Seven children were born to Mr and Mrs Mauser, all of whom are living. They are Will F Mauser, of Hayers township; Mrs C.H. Sanderman of Storm Lake; Mrs W.G. Shaffer of Winfred, SD; Mrs Edward Zion of Hayes township; Mrs F.H. Kay of Scott township; Mrs Edward Helmig of Hayes; and Richard the youngest of the family on the homestead in Hayes.
Mr Mauser was a studious man and books were ever his best friends and he turned to them more and more after his affliction deprived him of his activities. He was always just and while devoted to his family, taught them that love without justice is unkindness.
Although past the allotted age of three score and ten, Mr Mauser for his family will be the pioneer to the Other Shore. None have preceded him.
In addition to the life long companion, he leaves the seven children, 8 grandchildren, and four sisters and one brother. Three of the sisters and one brother could not come to the funeral services on account of ill heath. The one sister, Mrs Fred Schaffer of Scotland, SD and her daughter, Elizabeth came.
The services were held at the home on Sunday afternoon and at the Presbyterian church. The body was laid to rest in the Storm Lake cemetery. Thus is closed the earthly chapter of a long and useful life.
