January 3, 1939 - Storm Lake Register - Funeral services for H.E. Malbone, veteran fireman, well known resident of this city were held Monday afternoon at the Lakeside Presbyterian church. Bearers were members of the Odd Fellows lodge: John Hussy, Frank Waterbury, John Coulson, B F Gring, Ernest Flsk, and Henry Rubin. The Odd Fellows and Storm Lake firemen attended the service in a body. Ritualistic services at the grave were in charge of the Odd Fellows.
Attending the service from out of town were Mr and Mrs F.H. Austin and son, Dean, of Vermillion. S.D. and Allen Austin of Watertown, SD.
Herbert E Malbone was born in Columbus, Ohio May 12, 1855. The third son of S.S. and Jerusha Malbone. The family soon moved to Fort Dodge where his boyhood was spent. He came to Storm Lake in his early days and followed his trade as a mason until past 60 years of age.
In July 1882, he was married to Rachel A Jager who died on July 11, 1918. To this union was born two daughters: Mrs. Frank Austin of Vermilion. S.D. and Mrs. John F Reynolds of Jacksonville, Fla. He made his home the past few years with his daughters. He passed away in Vermilion after an illness of a week. There are five grandchildren and one great grandson surviving besides the daughters.
Mr Malbone was a member of the Storm Lake Odd Fellows Lodge and was the oldest member in point of service in the lodge. He was also one of the oldest members of the Storm Lake fire department.
