December 23, 1910 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - Alta Advertiser: On Tuesday morning at six o'clock occurred the death of Mrs Jacob Latch, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J.B. Smith. Death resulted from diseases peculiar to old age and came after an illness of only twenty-four hours duration.
Eliza Jane Thompson was born on May 31, 1832, in Lower Marion, Montgomery county, Pennsylvania. On the 18th day of July, 1853, she was united in marriage in the town of Marion Square, Pennsylvania, to Jacob Latch. To the union was born nine children, seven of whom, with the aged husband, survive her.
The children are: Mrs. Mollie E. Lucas, Mrs. Lydia L. Dinger and Mrs. Elmeda M. Smith, all of Alta; Eliza Ellen Latch and Mrs. Kate W. Bell, deceased; Mrs. Anna C. Bowers of Benson, Minnesota; Jacob T. Latch, of Argenta, Illinois; James T. Latch, of Lewiston, Montana; and Davis Latch, of Decatur, Illinois. In addition to these there are eighteen grandchildren left to mourn her loss.
The family moved to Iowa in the spring of 1882, settling near Storm Lake, where they resided until 1894, when Mr. and Mrs. Latch moved to Tennessee, remaining there for three years. In 1897 they returned to Storm Lake and remained there until September of this year. Owing to the poor health of Mrs. Latch the old couple came to Alta where they could received the care of their daughters, and have since made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
Mrs. Latch was a sincere Christian lady and has been an earnest worker in the Methodist Episcopal church since childhood. She was a faithful and loving wife and mother and was greatly beloved by those who knew her. The aged husband and the children have the sincere sympathy of the community in their sorrow.
A brief service will be held tomorrow (Thursday) at the Smith home. The remains will be taken to Storm Lake and the funeral services held at the Methodist Episcopal church at that place at 1 o'clock. The services will be conducted by Rev. Nathaniel Pye, former pastor of the Storm Lake church. Interment will take place in the Storm Lake cemetery.
