Spirit Lake Beacon - Feb 6, 1891 - Mrs. Don Smith received a telegram Saturday, January 17, announcing the death of her mother. She took the evening train by way of Iowa Falls, and arrived Sunday morning at Storm Lake.

The funeral took place in the afternoon, and she stayed until Tuesday morning. There was a wreck on the Illinois Central east of where she was so the train was late and she did not get home on the noon train, but went to Rock Rapids and came home on the evening train as the next day was the 21st, and Nella and S.A. Peters were married that day and she had to get home. She said the clouds seemed very dark to her Tuesday morning.
