Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - June 28, 1918 - A very sad death occurred at the Peter Johnson home in Alta last Friday, when their daughter-in-law, Mrs Luella Holmes Johnson passed away while visiting in their home.
Luella, daughter of Mr and Mrs William Holmes of Storm Lake was born in Scott township, Buena Vista county, Dec 29, 1881 and died at the home of her husbands parents, Mr and Mrs Peter Johnson in Alta June 21, 1918.
On March 11, 1903 she was united in marriage to James Johnson and to them two sons were born, Floyd aged 13 and Lyle aged 9 years. While on a visit to relatives and friends in this vicinity from her home in Brown Valley where they moved two years ago she became ill with what was diagnosed to be chicken pox but which later proved to be small pox. Her condition was not regarded serious, her physician pronouncing her out of all danger on Tuesday. However her heart proving too weak for the continued strain, she passed away Friday last at 2:35. Her husband reached Storm Lake Saturday evening in response to a telegram sent Friday morning telling him of her serious condition.
She leaves besides her husband and children, her father, William Holmes, an uncle, E.A. Holmes; and 5 sisters and 3 brothers: Mrs Stella Mainwaring of Davenport, L.R. Holmes of Seattle, WA, L.J.
