February 7, 1924 - April 13, 2016

Walter Wilkens, age 92, of Albert City, Iowa, died on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at the Pleasant View Nursing Home in Albert City.

Walter H. Wilkens, a son of William and Lina (Bockhop) Wilkens was born near Newell, Iowa, in Coon Township on February 7, 1924.

Baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Evangelical Reformed Church in rural Newell, which later became St. John’s United Church of Christ, Walt received his education at a country school. Before he married, he helped his parents farm.

On May 28, 1950, Walt married Lucille Sievers at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Newell, Iowa. Their marriage was blessed with three children, Paul, Sharon, and Carol. During their life together, Walt and Lucille farmed.

After retiring from their farm, Walt and Lucille moved to Albert City. He, however, continued to work for area farmers. A very active member of his church and community, Walt served in all the offices of the church and taught Sunday school as well. Throughout the years, he served as a Lincoln Township Trustee, a 4-H leader, treasurer of the Lion’s Club, Library Board member, president of the Young at Heart Club, driver of the Pleasant View van for two years, and caretaker of the cemetery. Named the Albert City Citizen of the Year in 2002, he, truly, enjoyed helping people.

In 2011, Walt and Lucille joined Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Albert City. They were blessed to share sixty-five years of married life together.

Walt’s life will always be honored and cherished by his family which includes his wife, Lucille, of Albert City, Iowa; his son, Paul (Pam Bishop), of Florence, Alabama; his daughters, Sharon (Mike) Leimer, of Blue Springs, Missouri, and Carol (Dan) Blevins, of Raytown, Missouri; his grandchildren: David Leimer, of Kansas City, Missouri, Emily (Kyle) Shipp, of Yigo, Guam, Chris (Kim) Blevins, of Kansas City, Missouri, Stephen Leimer, of Kansas City, Missouri, Derek Blevins, of Bolivar, Missouri, and Katie Blevins, and her fiancé, Jeron Tucker, of Overland Park, Kansas; his brother, Gilbert (Sally) Wilkens, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his sister, Wilma (Kenneth) Johnson, of Columbus, Ohio; and his sister-in-law, Phyllis Rohlfsen, of Newell, Iowa; as well as by other extended family members and many friends.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Orlen Rohlfsen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, April 18, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Albert City. Burial will follow in St. John's United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Newell, Iowa. Visitation will take place Sunday, April 17, 2016, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Albert City is in charge of the arrangements.
