Raymond Harry Rassler, a son of Albert and Isabelle (Boettcher) Rassler, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on April 16, 1952. Baptized as an infant at the Methodist Church, he lived his youth and received his education in Storm Lake.
From June 27, 1972, until June 17, 1974, Ray served his country in the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge, he served in the Iowa National Guard until he retired from the military in February of 2001. While in the military, Ray served in the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, the invasion of Grenada, and Operation Desert Storm as an airborne ranger.
On September 2, 1972, Ray married Sally Platt in Elk Point, South Dakota. Their marriage was blessed with two daughters: Malissa and Nicole. Following their wedding, they resided in Spring Lake, North Carolina, while Ray was stationed at Fort Bragg. After his discharge, they moved to Storm Lake and Ray worked at Hy-Grade Foods. Later, he took a job at Wilson Foods in Cherokee. In 1979, however, the family moved to Rembrandt, and Ray went to work at Ranco Manufacturing in Sioux Rapids, a potion he held for the next twenty-eight years.
A member of the American Legion, the Moose Lodge, and the Vietnam Veterans of America, Ray enjoyed camping, fishing, watching westerns on television, reading his favorite Louis L’Amour western novels, and manufacturing Christmas angels and military silhouettes in his spare time. As an important contributing member of the Rembrandt community, he served as a first responder. Always quick to help anyone in need, he would come at a moment’s notice. Moreover, he dotted on his cat, Figaro “Figgy.” The two were inseparable. He was proud of his two granddaughters who held a very special place in his heart and life.
