November 14, 1926 - March 22, 2016Laverne M. Mommer, 89, passed away on March 22, 2016, at Ramsey Village in Des Moines.
Laverne, a daughter of Ross B. and Mildred (Sliefert) Shannon, was born on November 14, 1926, in Storm Lake, Iowa. She graduated from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake with a bachelor's degree and earned a master's degree from the Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado. During her career, she taught at Drake University in Des Moines, Grand View College also in Des Moines, and DMACC in Ankeny before retiring from the American Institute of Business in Des Moines.
Laverne was a charter member of the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Urbandale. She, also, belonged to the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing cards, especially bridge, hosting parties that could last for days, playing bingo with her youngest daughter, and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children: LaDee (Wesley) Piner, of Wilmington, North Carolina, LaMont (Joan) Mommer, of DeKalb, Illinois, Lori (David) Feiten, of Orlando, Florida, LaRae (Tim) Allard, of Akron, Iowa, and Ric (Alicia) Mommer, of Cupertino, California; nineteen grandchildren and one great grandson. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Darrell; her sisters, Viola, Doris, Opal, and Yvonne; and her brother, Ross, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions go to Hospice of Central Iowa (HCI Care Services), 2910 Westown Parkway, Suite 200, West Des Moines, Iowa 50266-1332 or to the Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3600 - 75th Street, Urbandale, Iowa 50322.
Funeral services for Laverne will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 25, 2016, at Iles Westover Chapel, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be at Resthaven Cemetery.
