Storm Lake Register - July 30, 1940 - Mrs H.L. Hughes, 83, who had resided in Storm lake since 1904, died Friday at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Fred C Witter, 206 Lake avenue, with whom she lived. Mrs Hughes had been in failing health for the past 12 months as the result of a fractured hip.

Funeral services for Mrs Hughes were held Sunday afternoon at the Hughes funeral home. Interment was in the Lakeview cemetery.

Mary Jane Williams, daughter of Mary and James Williams, was born Nov 11, 1856 at Utica, WI. She was the youngest of 6 children, two sisters and three brothers having preceded her in death.

She received her education in Utica and grew to womanhood there. On Oct 13, 1886 she was married to Hugh Lloyd Hughes at Cambria, WI. Their first home was in Howard, S.D. where Mr Hughes was engaged in the lumber business.

Four children were born to Mr and Mrs Hughes. They are Mrs Fred Witter, Morton J Hughes, Mrs Lawrence Conrad and Everett Lloyd Hughes, all of whom are residents of Storm Lake with the exception of Mrs Conrad who lived at Carroll.

In 1909 the family moved to Storm Lake where Mr Hughes established a lumber firm which he conducted about 30 years. In 1919 he entered the furniture and undertaking business. Mr Hughes preceded his wife in death on Oct 5, 1938. Everett operated the furniture store and the other son, Morton, has continued the mortician work in the Hughes funeral home.

An enjoyable event in the life of Mr and Mrs Hughes was the celebration of their golden wedding anniversary on Oct 13, 1936.

Following the death of her husband, Mrs Hughes spent the greater part of the time at the home of her son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Fred Witter having been there a year and a half.

Mrs Hughes was a faithful member of the Methodist church. Mrs Hughes had been in failing health for the past 12 months as the result of a fractured hip. At the time of her death, July 24, she had reached the age of 83 years, 3 months, and 14 days.

Besides her children Mrs Hughes leaves to mourn 3 grandchildren: Miss Jane Hughes of Des Moines, Miss Dora Lena Hughes and Helen J Witter.
