Storm Lake Register - April 1, 1941 - Francis Louis Hughes, son of Mr and Mrs Louis Hughes, was born at Berne, Switzerland on Jan 21, 1854. When less than a year old he came with his parents to the US. The family first settled in NY state where the father was employed in the mines.

Later they went to Massachusetts and in 1872 the family came to Iowa shortly after the Illinois Central railroad had been laid to Storm Lake. The family had planned to move to Fort Dodge, but the conductor on the train persuaded them to come to Storm Lake.

As a young man Mr Hughes worked at numerous odd jobs and later became a carpenter and contractor. He also worked for Jay Russell, contractor.

Mr Hughes went to Casanova, WI in 1874 and in 1876 was united in marriage to Florine Beuchat. To their union 3 children were born: Frank A, Emma, and Joseph A. In 1879 Mr Hughes moved again to Storm Lake.

The family moved from Storm Lake to Leeds in 1891. Mrs Hughes passed away at Leeds in 1892. In 1893 Mr Hughes married Mary Davidson and 2 years later they returned to Storm Lake where Mr Hughes has since continuously resided. The second Mrs Hughes preceded him in death on April 21, 1930.

As a carpenter, Mr Hughes assisted in the building of the Buena Vista county courthouse, the old North school, Milwaukee depot, and numerous other public buildings and residents. At the time of death he was the oldest living member of the Storm Lake fire department. His brother Albert "Bert" Hughes, is the only other charter member.

With the exception of four years spent at Leeds, Mr Hughes had continuously lived 61 years in the home on Ontario street where he passed away.

Mr Hughes passed away about 2:15 Monday morning. His four children were with him at the time. They are: Frank A Hughes, Storm Lake; Emma (Mrs D.E. Rogers) Dunlap; Joseph A Hughes, Storm Lake; and a step-daughter, Maude (Mrs W.E. Kislingbury) Alta. One brother, Albert, and three sisters: Mrs Clara Biggins and Mrs Mary Joray of Storm Lake and Mrs Delia Hughes of Sheldon also survive.
