Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - June 18, 1936 - Editors Note: This remarkable interesting account of the life of the late Joe Haines was furnished this newspaper by Mrs R.H. Haines of 934 Menlo Ave, Los Angeles.
On June 11th, 1936 at his home in Los Angeles, CA, Joseph Starr Haines died very suddenly of a heart attack.
He was a native of California born in Sacramento, Feb 3, 1852. He was of New England parentage. His father, J.A. Haines and mother, for many years well know and beloved residents of Storm Lake, Iowa were adventurers of the early days of the California gold rush of 1849.
His parents, leaving Boston in the fall of 1851, crossed the Isthmus of Panama on mule back while the sailing vessel rounded Cape Horn, picking up their passengers on the west coast on their way to San Francisco, where they followed the Sacramento river by boat to Sacramento.
There Joseph Haines was born. The ballast of the sailing vessel being used by his father to build the first brick building built in that place. The building stands at the foot of K street today and is still in use.
When he was about 6 months old his parents returned to Manchester, N.H. again crossing the Isthmus where many exciting and interesting incidents occurred, for it took courage in those days when no hotels were available and traveling was done under great difficulties.
He received his early education in Manchester N.H. Graduated from Dartmouth college, Hanover, N.H. in 1847, valedictorian of his class. He returned to Manchester and taught Latin and Greek in the high school there for a time, later entering a prominent law office.
He, with his parents, moved to Storm Lake, Iowa and were again pioneers of that community in 1878.
He was very quiet and reserved by nature and most devoted to his brother, S.R. Haines and wife, with whom he has lived for many years. Their harmonious partnership in business as well as home life has endured until his death. He never married.
