November 30, 1950 - Storm Lake Pilot-Tribune - Melchoir Gutel, son of Esiah and Rose Gutel, was born in St Denis de Rebais, Seine et Marne, France, September 28, 1853. He spent his early life in France, and after serving five years in the French army came to America with his uncle, Theodule Gutel, and lived in north central Illinois in the vicinity of Odell and Dwight.

On February 17, 1885, he was united in marriage to Ida Roux of Ottawa, Illinois, who preceded him in death in October of 1920. Four children were born to this union: Joseph R. of Storm Lake, Jule E, who passed away in February, 1948; and Elizabeth and David, both of whom died in infancy.

In March of 1895 he came to Storm Lake and settled on a farm in Washington township, which was the family home until some time after his wife's death. Then after living for several years in Storm Lake he spent the remainder of his life at the home of his son, Joseph, north of town.

He passed from this life on Saturday, Nov 25, at the age of 97 years, 1 month, and 27 days, after just a few days of illness.

Mr. Gutel was a quiet unassuming man, even tempered and dependable, who always tried to make his life fit in harmoniously with the lives of those with whom he was associated. One of the main characteristics of his life was to be contented, not only with his station in life, but also with whatever situation he found himself in. This characteristic was very noticeable all through his life, both in joy and happiness and in trouble and sorrow, which like all the rest of us he had his share.

He never affiliated himself with any church organization, but during the time he lived in Storm Lake for nearly ten years he was noted for his regular and faithful attendance at the Methodist church and Sunday school, almost regardless of the weather. While living with his son he attended the Assembly of God church at Truesdale occasionally during his declining years.

He leaves to mourn, one son, Joseph R., of Storm Lake; five grandchildren: Joseph M. and Marion L, of Storm Lake; Lola Mae Zitney and Beulah of Los Angeles, Calif; and Ida Sheneman of Oxford, Nebr.; also six great grandchildren and a host of other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in charge of Rev Clifford Gannon and Rev William Andrews. Mrs. Herbert Rice sang My Home Sweet Home and After, accompanied by Miss Dorothy Larson. Bearers were Francis Carney, Raymond Mandernach, Bernard FJordbak, Clarence Strock, Leo Hoferman and Oscar Larson. He was laid to rest in Lake View cemetery.
