Ruth Lichtenberg
October 18, 1927 - March 25, 2016

Ruth Elizabeth (Grieme) Lichtenberg was born on October 18, 1927, to Henry and Malinda Grieme in Alta, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Hanover, Iowa, she attended Hanover Lutheran Parochial School and graduated from Alta High School. In 1946, she had plans to attend Colorado Woman's College to study interior design. Then, she married Roger Lichtenberg on September 19, 1948. After settling on the family farm, they were blessed with two children.

In the mid-1970s, Roger and Ruth relocated to Minnesota. After Roger passed away in March of 1982, Ruth remained in Minnesota for ten more years providing in-home care for Victor and Wilma "Billie" Moose. Following Billie's death, she moved to Denison, Iowa, where she provided in-home care for Ernie Raun for another five years. Then, she retired and moved to Dunlap. Nonetheless, she continued her "caretaking" activities by voluntarily taking friends to appointments, visiting shut-ins, and doing church work.

A member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dunlap, Ruth, readily, participated in WELCA group activities. A member of Entre Nous Club and the Friendly Neighbors Club, she, also, enjoyed collecting angels, gardening, baking, entertaining, reading, consignment shopping, and interior decorating. Moreover, she found a special joy in her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Friends and family, often, contacted her for advice on home decorating. An accomplished pianist very proud of her German heritage, she, especially, enjoyed Beethoven’s piano sonatas.

Ruth died on Friday, March 25, 2016, at the Dunlap Special Care Center at the age of 88 years, five months, and seven days. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother and sister in infancy; her husband, Roger Lichtenberg; her parents-in-law, Walter and Marie Lichtenberg; her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Naomi Grieme; and her brother-in-law, Lyle Lichtenberg.

Those left to cherish her memory include her two children, Joel (Candi) Lichtenberg, of Owings Mills, Maryland, and Gretchen (Virgil) Peterson, of Dunlap, Iowa; six grandchildren, Joel (April) and Matt (Katie) Lichtenberg, Sheila (Craig) McConville, Sheri Lichtenberg Murphy, Jodi (Jason) Nelson, and Jay (Marianne) Peterson; fourteen great grandchildren, Abby, Aliza, Drake, Esti, Isaac, Josiah, Jozef, Lily, Marlaina, Maya, Nathan, Noah, Shai, and Zeb; her sister-in-law, Marie Lichtenberg, of Alta, Iowa; four nieces; one nephew; and an "adopted" daughter, Joan Saathoff; as well as many other relatives and friends.

Per Ruth's request, her body was bequeathed to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for medical education and scientific research.

A memorial celebration service for Ruth will be held at a later date.
