April 24, 1895 - Storm Lake Buena Vista Vidette - Mrs. V.A. Bryant died very suddenly at her home in Hayes Township last Wednesday from an attack of apoplexy.
The funeral was held Friday at the Universalist church and largely attended by friends from the neighborhood of V.A. Bryant and citizens of Storm Lake. The body arrived at the Universalist church at 11:30 a.m. The services were conducted by Rev. Arnoup, a quartette, with Mrs. Guilford at the organ, rendered appropriate music. The words of the preacher, while they brought tears to many an eye, were yet of an uplifting and more than hopeful character. At the close the remains were reviewed by the hearers as they filed from the church. A brief service was held at the cemetery and the body was solemnly laid in its last resting place.
The deceased, Jennie N. Bryant, was born in Huron county, Ohio, Oct. 1, 1840. Her parents, Lafayette and Elmira Waldron, were old settlers of that county, and died when she was young, when she went to reside with friends.
At the age of 22 she was married on Feb. 23, 1862, to Velorus A. Bryant, the now surviving husband.
Shortly after the marriage, Mr. Bryant joined the Union Army and was immediately sent to the seat of war. In his absence his wife came west to Chicago, where under able instructors she learned the art of telegraphy and was first employed by the Western Union Telegraph Co. at New Hartford, and afterwards at Iowa Falls and Ft. Dodge. Female telegraphers were very much rarer in those days than now.
Mr. Bryant served in the army until the close of the war, when he received an honorable discharge and proceeded to join his wife at New Hartford, and from that time afterwards they were never separated while she lived. About fourteen years ago they settled upon a tract of land in Hayes Township, and engaged in agricultural pursuits with very successful results. They lived a happy and devoted life.
No children survive them.
Deceased was a woman with a slight tendency to apoplexy and on April 17th she was seized with a fit of that disease which in a few minutes terminated her earthly career. She was a lady of an unusually bright and intelligent character. Her disposition was cheerful, confiding, lovable and charitable. She has left hosts of friends who mourn their loss and deeply sympathize with her bereaved husband.
