March 5, 1925 - Storm Lake Register - Henry Berkler, a resident of Storm Lake for a number of years, and well known and highly esteemed in this city, passed away at his home 214 Cayuga Street, last Saturday at 4:15 p.m., after an illness of sometime, and his death is deeply mourned by relatives and many friends.

Henry Berkler was born in Hesso, Darmstadt, Germany, December 28, 1837 and, died at his home in Storm Lake Saturday, February 28, 1925, at the age of 87 years and 2 months.

He spent his early boyhood days in Germany, and at the age of 15 years sailed with his parents to America, in a sailboat, being on the water for 33 days. After landing in New York, they traveled by rail farther inland, settling on a farm near Peoria, Illinois in July 1853, where he lived for 12 years.

In 1859 he was married to Pauline Ehman, and to this union three children were born. In 1865 with his family, he moved to a farm northeast of Decatur, Macon county, Illinois, where they passed through the hardships of the pioneer days. His wife passed away a few years later, leaving the husband and children.

In 1877 he was married to Catherine M. Schultz, and to this, union 12 children were born. He united with the church when he was 14 years of age and was a faithful member until his death. Mr. Berkler was a kind loving husband and father, his greatest pleasure being with his family in the home. He was always interested in the good of the community in which he lived, and was held in the highest regard by all who knew him. He lived on the same farm for 47 years, and in 1912 moved to Storm Lake, where he spent the remaining years of his life.

Those left to mourn his death are his wife and the following children: Mrs. Kate Haub of Palmyra, Indiana; William F. Berkler, Lottie Berkler, Mrs. Nettie Myers, and Mrs. Lela Jones, of Storm Lake; Mrs. Ada Denise, John D. Berkler, Frank J. Berkler, and Fred M. Berkler of Lytton; Mrs. Amelia Colburn of Sioux Rapids; Mrs. Esther Myers of Sulphur Springs; Mrs. Gertrude Betz of Decatur, Illinois; and Carl S. Berkler of Argenta, Illinois.

Elizabeth and Edward H. Berkler preceeded him in death. He also leaves 41 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, two brothers and one sister, besides other relatives and hosts of friends.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Episcopal church on Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. O.M. Bond, and interment was in the Storm Lake cemetery. A large crowd of relatives and friends were in attendance at the funeral. The pall bearers were six of the grandsons of the deceased. They were: Earl Berkler, Henry Berkler, Frank Colburn, John Gardner, Fred Webb and Quinton Armstrong.

Those from out of town in attendance at the funeral were: Mrs. Robert Fullerton and son, Ralph, of Laurens; Mr. and Mrs. H. Troxal and Mr. and Mrs. Will Smith of Rockwell City; Miss Helen Denise of Ames; Charles Grobell, Pearl and Lloyd Hutchinson, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Clymer, and Samuel Ferris of Lytton; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Webb of Mapleton, Minn.; Bert and Fred Gardner of Newell; Will Gardner, Mrs. Will Gardner, Jr., Mrs. Pauline Little, Mrs. Alvin McQuitty and Don Gardiner of Rocheport, Missouri.
