Karen K. Gaskill, age 71, of Alta, passed away on Monday, February 8, 2016, at her residence of Alta.
Karen Kay McGowan Gaskill was born on February 18, 1944, in Alta, Iowa, to Urany B. and Elizabeth (Gerjets) McGowan. Baptized and confirmed at the United Methodist Church of Alta, she attended Alta Consolidated Grade School and graduated from Alta High School in 1962.
Karen married Russell Gaskill on October 28, 1962, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa. Their union was blessed with three children: Rhonda, Jeff, and Kari. Except for five years early in their marriage when she and Russ lived in Aurelia and Cherokee, she was a lifelong resident of Alta.
Karen worked as a secretary first at the Mental Health Institute in Cherokee, Iowa, and then for the Iowa State Patrol - District 5 Office in Cherokee, Iowa, for twenty-six years, retiring in April of 2010.
Karen is survived by her husband, Russell, of Alta, Iowa; her children, Rhonda (Michael) Ross, of Des Moines, Iowa, Jeffrey A. Gaskill, of Alta, Iowa, and Kari (Neil) Puetz, of Plattsburg, Missouri; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; her brothers, Garlan (Helen) and Merlin McGowan, of Alta, Iowa; her brothers-in-law, Kenneth Gaskill, of Denison, Iowa, and Don (Joan) Gaskill, of Meriden, Iowa; her sisters-in-law, Kathi McGowan, of Destin, Florida, Esther Snyder, of Indianola, Iowa, Marilyn Arhart, of Columbia Falls, Montana, and Janet Schimmer and Melba Smith, both of Galva, Iowa; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Deloris Luttrell; her brothers: Delmar, Donald, Robert, and Dennis McGowan; her parents-in-law, Kenneth R. and Esther Lorraine (Swanson) Gaskill; her sisters-in-law: Delores, Betty, Mary, and MaryAnn McGowan; her brothers-in-law, Ronald Snyder, Elvin Schimmer and Lloyd Arhart.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at 10:30 AM at the First Congregational Church of Aurelia with the Rev. Bruce Rapp officiating. Burial will follow at a later date. A visitation will be on Friday, February 12, 2016, from 4:00 to 8:00 PM with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
