Darold Lee Berg
April 1, 1942 - November 26, 2015

“All aboard!” The Great Conductor called. Darold handed in his ticket and boarded the heavenly train on Thursday, November 26, 2015, at the age of 73.

Darold Lee Berg was born on April 2, 1942, to Leslie and Vivian (White) Berg, and grew up on the family farm north of Albert City, Iowa. Even as a small boy, he was fascinated by the train that ran through a corner of the property and would run out to wave at the engineer as it passed by. One day, the engineer stopped to give Darold a short ride to the next town and then, back on the return trip. With that experience, he began a life-long love affair with railroads and in particular with the steam locomotive era.

In 1961, Darold graduated from Albert City-Truesdale High School. Jesse Owens, four-time Olympic gold medalist from the 1936 Olympics was invited as the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony. Because of his own abilities on the track team, Darold was chosen to host Mr. Owens throughout the day and introduce him at the graduation ceremonies.

For over thirty years, Darold worked for HEG Painting in Cherokee, Iowa. Very knowledgeable in the history of trains as well as in the building train layouts, he, actively, participated in the model railroad clubs in Norwest Iowa and became a longtime supporter and member of the Colorado Railroad Museum. Indeed, he spent his most memorable vacations in Colorado, riding the Durango-Silverton route. In addition, he also enjoyed antiquing and attending flea markets.

On February 25, 1995, Darold married Karen Marie (Brandt) Mauser. She survives him as well as two children from a previous marriage, Jody (Kyle) Rupp, of Gretna, Nebraska, and Chad (Melissa) Berg, of Littleton, Colorado, his step-children, Edward (Ida Rindshoj) Mauser, of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Elizabeth (Michael) Franzmeier, of Rembrandt, Iowa; his grandchildren: Aryn, Amanda, Dilyn, and Bailey Berg; Cole and Emersyn Franzmeier, and Savanna Rupp; and his sister, Karen Ann Berg, of Aurora, Colorado; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of other relatives and friends, all of whom will miss him greatly.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M., Friday, December 18, 2015, at the Stuart-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, December 19, 2015, at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Darold Berg Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of the Johnson Family Funeral Home, PO Box 246, Stuart, Iowa 50250.
