Myrl Edwin Williamson
May 29, 1921 - November 9, 2015Myrl Williamson, age 94, of The Villages, Florida, formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Monday, November 9, 2015, at the Cornerstone Hospice House, The Villages, Florida.
Myrl Edwin Williamson, a son of George Edwin and Mabel Adella (Madson) Williamson, was born on May 29, 1921, in Storm Lake, Iowa. Baptized in Everly, Iowa, he attended school in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School in 1937.
On September 10, 1942, Myrl enlisted in the United States Navy. Proudly, he served his country during World War II providing protection for supply ships to Guam and Okinawa. He, also, served on the USS Nereus and took part in the Road’s End Mission, which scuttled Japanese submarines. He was, honorably, discharged on November 25, 1946.
On December 8, 1944, Myrl married Betty Ann Rinehart in San Francisco, California. Subsequently, they were blessed with three children: Joan, Faye, and George.
Myrl worked at the post office in Storm Lake for many years. In his spare time, he was a rock hound, an avid fisherman, and a camping enthusiast. He especially enjoyed baseball and the Little League World Series. Most of all, however, he loved spending time with his family and friends and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Joan (Doug) Fraser, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Faye (Gary) Deitering, of Schaller, Iowa, and George (Chris) Williamson, of Newburgh, Indiana; his grandchildren: Barbara (Peter) Straka, of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Chad (Gwen) Deitering, of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, Jeremy (Sarah) Deitering, of Schaller, Iowa, Matthew Williamson, of Indiana, Brian (Paige) Williamson, of Newburgh Indiana, and Summer (Jay) Benton, of Wisconsin; his great grandchildren: Jackson and Samuel Benton; Aiden, Brody, and Mason Deitering; Chris, Jack, and James Stratka; and Madison Williamson; and his sister, Ruth (Jerry) DeBettignies; as well as extended family members and friends.
Myrl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty; his brother, Lloyd (Hildegard) Williamson; and his sisters: Arlene (Earl) Eastman, Amber Stanton, Opal (Ken) Hoyne, and Helen (Ishmel) Fetters.
The family would like to thank all who provided friendship and support over the past few years, in particular David, Patsy, and Diane, children of Myrl’s brother Lloyd, who reside in Florida, and Amy and other staff members of Arbor Village. Many thanks to Pastor Dave who has been a long-time friend, and to Cornerstone Hospice of the Villages who provided an unequalled level of service and care when it was most needed.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
