July 20, 1933 - November 7, 2015Troy W. Hermstad, age 82, of Webb, Iowa, died on November 7, 2015, at the Spencer Hospital in Spencer, Iowa.
A son of Harold and Tillie (Sorenson) Hermstad, Troy Wendell Hermstad was born on July 20, 1933, in Cornell, Iowa. Baptized and later confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids, he remained a lifelong member of that congregation. In his youth, he attended school in Cornell where he graduated with the class of 1951.
On February 27, 1953, Troy married Janet Olson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with two sons, Troy, Jr., and Jay.
In 1953, Troy was drafted into the United States Army where he proudly served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1955. Then, he returned to the Cornell area where he raised his family and started farming. Having a passion for farming, he took great pride in maintaining straight rows. He belonged to the American Legion in Sioux Rapids.
In his spare time, Troy enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, and playing a game of horseshoes, pool, ping pong, and cards, especially pinochle. He loved socializing with friends and playing practical jokes. He will be remembered for his bright smile, hardy laugh, and good sense of humor. Moreover, he valued his family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-two years, Janet Hermstad, of Webb, Iowa; his son, Troy, Jr., (Pat) Hermstad, and daughter-in-law, Carol Hermstad, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his grandchildren: Jessica (Jeff) Larson, of Sioux Center, Iowa, and Greg and David Hermstad, both of Webb, Iowa; his great grandson, William Larson; and his sister-in-law, Colleen Hermstad, of Spencer, Iowa; as well as nephews; nieces; cousins; extended family members; and friends.
Troy was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Jay Hermstad; his brother, Milo Hermstad; his nephew, Bruce Hermstad; and his niece, Denise Hermstad.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 12, 2015, at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will take place Wednesday, November 11, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
