Vermayne William Gard
September 5, 1926 - November 15, 2015

Vermayne W. Gard, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Sunday, November 15, 2015, at the Ruthven Community Care Center in Ruthven, Iowa.

A son of John and Anne (Ernst) Gard, Vermayne was born on September 5, 1926, in Mitchell, South Dakota. He attended school in Early, graduating in 1944. Then, he farmed and attended Buena Vista College where he earned a degree in Business Administration.

On June 2, 1949, Vermayne married Rose Marie Keenan in Schaller, Iowa. Subsequently, they were blessed with six children: Susan, John, Patricia, Robert, Rose, and Nancy.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake and a former Grand Knight, Vermayne, also, served as a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus,
In addition, he volunteered with hospice.

Vermayne spent many years of his life farming. Moreover, he kept busy as the owner and operator of Gard Hardware in Storm Lake, the manager of the Sears & Robuck store in Storm Lake, the owner of the Gambles Store in Storm Lake, and the manager of Iowa Automatic Gas Company in Early. In 1989, he retired, but came out of retirement to work at the Storm Lake Walmart for eighteen years in the electronics department. At the age of 83, however, he began his second retirement. A well-respected and well-liked individual, he had a reputation as an honest and fair businessman.

A multitalented man, especially in restoring classic cars and woodworking, he was known as “Mr. Fix It.” because he could, remarkably, repair just about anything to make it work again.

Vermayne will be remembered as an amateur ham radio operator and for his wonderful sense of humor. Moreover, he, always, placed his family first. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Susan (Vince) Davis, of Early, Iowa, Dr. John (Dr. Azadeh Mozaffari) Gard, of Dallas, Texas, Rose (Harold) Lloyd, of Spencer, Iowa, and Patricia (Mike) Woodle, Bob (Missy) Gard, and Nancy (Bob) Reis, all of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; his grandchildren: Collin (Gina) and Cory (Jess) Davis; Bela and Gabriella Gard; Trevor and Wesley Lloyd; Drew, Matt, and Olivia Reis; and Adam (Amy), Dr. Brad (Dr. Christina), and Drew Woodle; his great grandchildren: Carson, Keagen, and Pierce Davis and Brooke, Kailey, and Serenity Woodle; and his sister, Donna Ann Crocker, of Rocklin, California; as well as extended family members and friends.

Vermayne was preceded in death by his parents, John and Anne Gard; his wife, Rose Marie Gard; and his sister, Noreene Aquino.

Memorial Mass will be offered on Saturday, November 21, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Early, Iowa. Visitation will take place Friday, November 20, 2015, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
