April 14, 1937 - July 4, 2015

Susan Taylor, age 78, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Saturday, July 4, 2015, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Susan Naomi Whittlesey, a daughter of Charles and Inez (Carmer) Whittlesey, was born on April 14, 1937, in Pocahontas County, Iowa. She attended school in Gilmore City, Iowa, and graduated from Gilmore City High School. While attending the Methodist Hospital School for Nurses in Sioux City, she began her courtship with Norman Lee Taylor, at the time a member of the armed forces. They married on October 11, 1958, in Gilmore City. Subsequently, they were blessed with two children, Darwin and Sandra.

After Susan and Norman moved to Storm Lake, she began working at the Buena Vista County Hospital. Later, she worked at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community. An active member of the United Methodist Church, she joined the United Methodist Women, the Women’s Circle, and the church choir.

In her spare time, Susan enjoyed caring for her pets, gardening, baking, and watching old television shows. Most of all, however, she loved caring for her family members and spending time with them. She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend and will be deeply missed.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Darwin (Jody) Taylor and Sandra Taylor, all of Storm Lake, Iowa; her grandchildren, Laura Ryherd and Adam Taylor; her great grandchildren: Aubree, Emma, Wylie, and Oliver; her sister, Evelyn, of Humboldt, Iowa; her sisters-in-law: Norma Hauck, of Livermore, Iowa, Barbara (Gary) Kannenberg, of Junction City, Kansas, and Frieda Sherrill, of Sioux City, Iowa; and her brothers-in-law: George (Jean) Taylor, of Amelia Island, Florida, and Frank (Jane) Taylor, of Brandon, South Dakota; as well as extended family members and friends.

Susan was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Thomas and Leila Taylor; her husband, Norman; her brother and sister-in-law, Byron and Marietta Whittlesey; her brothers-in-law: Knute Petersen, Al Sherrill, and Wally Hauck; and her nephew, Keith Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place Tuesday, July 7, 2015, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
