Edward Charles Laird
June 17, 1945 - June 16, 2015Edward Charles Laird, M.D., passed away on June 16, 2015, after a long illness related to COPD. A son of Robert Harold and Josephine Laird, Ed was born on June 17, 1945. He grew up in Storm Lake and attended Iowa State College and Buena Vista College (University) where he earned a BS degree. After graduating from medical school at the University of Iowa in 1971, he practiced family medicine, first in Storm Lake, then in Jamaica, West Indies, and finally in Cape Coral, Florida. He retired after forty-four years of practice on April 1, 2012, because of his failing health.
A lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, USA, and for the past five years of New Hope Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ft. Myers, he had a firm belief in Jesus Christ. As a physician and educator, he enjoyed teaching a class on the Old Testament over a twenty-five year period at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Ft. Myers, Florida as well as practicing medicine.
Ed is survived by Susan, his loving wife of forty-eight years; his children, Kelley, Jay, and Jorden; his mother, Joan Laird; his brother, Alan (Lisa) Laird; his grandchildren, Gabriel and Connor Diesch; his brothers-in-law, Arlyn (Jane Hotze) Wiechmann, Randall (Carolyn) Hotze, and Kenton (Judy) Hotze; and his nephews: Jeff, Brian, and Duane Hotze; Todd, Brett, and Cody Wiechmann; and Matthew and Daniel Laird; as well as by colleagues, friends, neighbors, and patients. Ed was preceded in death by his father, Robert Laird, and a son, Joshua James Laird. He was loved and respected by everyone he met.
A memorial service will be held at New Hope Presbyterian Church on June 23, 2015, at 4:00 p.m.
Donations in his memory made be made to the New Hope Presbyterian Church of Fort Myers Building Fund.
