Elmer Jensen, age 97, of Sac City, Iowa, and formerly of Newell, Iowa, died on Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.

Elmer Jensen, a son of Andrew and Sophie (Rasmussen) Jensen, was born on May 14, 1918, in Newell, Iowa. Baptized at St. John’s Church of Christ in Newell and later confirmed at Nain Lutheran Church in Newell, he attended first country school at Coon Township and then high school in Albert City before graduating from Newell High School in 1935.

Elmer farmed with his parents until 1942. He was, then, inducted into the United States Air Force on June 13, 1942. Stationed in nineteen different locations, he served his country primarily in England, France, and Germany. On January 3, 1946, he was honorably discharged with the rank of sargent.

On April 24, 1947, Elmer married Marjorie Hansen in Audubon, Iowa. To their union, two sons were born, Larry and Ronald.

Elmer farmed north of Newell for thirty years. In addition, he served for seven years both as the Compliance Supervisor for the Buena Vista County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) and as the supervisor for Statistical Reporting Service in Northwest Iowa. Moreover, he served on the Farm Bureau Board.

After sixteen years working as a substitute rural mail carrier in the Newell and Fonda areas, Elmer was appointed as a regular mail carrier. At that time, he and Marjorie moved to town. After he retired in 1987, he served as a Gas Monitor for the DNR from 1994 to 2005. For his work for the DNR, he received Letters of Commendation from both Governors Branstad and Vilsack.

A member of Nain Lutheran Church in Newell and a longtime secretary and treasurer for the Danish Brotherhood, Elmer, also, belonged to American Legion Post #193. In his spare time, he enjoyed dancing, reading Westerns, following sports, and participating with the Newell Horseshoe Team. In addition, he umpired ball games for the town teams and at the Babe Ruth level as well. Elmer and Marjorie enjoyed boating and relaxing at their cabin at Twin Lakes. After selling the cabin, they frequented the casinos in Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota.
