Wendell "Ike" Hunter
September 25, 1933 - May 12, 2015Wendell Dale Hunter, known to many as “Ike,” passed away unexpectedly in his home on Tuesday, May 12, 2015.
Born on September 25, 1933, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Esther May Elizabeth Dreessen, he came into a family of four siblings. Elizabeth raised the kids in Jolley, Iowa, where he attended school. At a young age, he began working at Hormel in Fort Dodge, Iowa, where he remained until his time to serve in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
In 1958, he married Donna (North) Hunter. They made their home in Manson, Iowa. Here, they were blessed with four children: Twyla Brown-Armstrong, Robin (Bruce) Nieland, Warren (Marty) Hunter, and Dawn Hunter. In time, they were, also, blessed with six grandchildren and five great grandchildren, who have all gotten to know him well. He is preceded in death by his mother, Esther, and son, Warren.
In 1968, the family took up residence in Newell, Iowa, where Ike put his skills to work as a butcher and meat cutter at the Newell Locker. In 1996, he retired from the business, passing ownership on to family. He enjoyed his family, his garden, a good NASCAR race, or a puzzle on a day too miserable to spend outside. He will be missed by friends and family alike.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell.
