Irma M. Gregg
May 14, 1924 - March 26, 2015

Irma M. Gregg, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on March 26, 2015, at her home in Storm Lake.

Irma Mae (Johnson) Gregg, a daughter of Claus and Hazel (Burgess) Johnson, was born in Egan, South Dakota, on May 14, 1924. She grew up on the family farm near Egan and graduated from Egan High School. Then, she studied home economics at South Dakota State College in Brookings and at Iowa State College in Ames. On June 9, 1945, she married Warren Gregg in Chariton, Iowa, at the church where Warren’s brother-in-law, the Rev. Howard Trask, was the pastor. Since Warren was in the army at the time, they moved around the United States to several postings where Irma worked as a laboratory technician.

After their time with the military, Irma and Warren lived in Lisbon, North Dakota, and Luverne, Minnesota, where they started their family. Irma loved and cherished her four children. Their first child, born in 1947, was quickly followed by two more sons and a daughter. A very busy mother of four children, she made sure she provided a nourishing and supportive home for her growing family. In 1956, they all moved to Storm Lake.

Irma enjoyed her years as a mother, grandmother, and homemaker. Completely dedicated to caring for her family, she liked cooking and sewing for them. In addition, she valued her large circle of friends. Very active in the youth and women’s programs at the United Methodist Church, she, also, served in several leadership roles in Chapter EP, P.E.O. After her children were in college, all four at one time, Irma worked in the administrative office at the Storm Lake Schools and regularly volunteered at the Buena Vista County Hospital and the Methodist Manor. During her later years, she doted on her nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and they looked forward to spending time with Grandma as much as she did having them around her. Irma and Warren spent many years splitting their time between Iowa and Texas, and they enjoyed many wonderful winters at their home on South Padre Island, Texas, with family and friends visiting them at their beach retreat.

Irma had a long and wonderful life and a positive influence on everyone she touched. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her loving husband of almost seventy years, Warren Gregg, and her children: Dr. Daniel Gregg, and his wife, Jeanne, of Morgan Hill, California, Dr. Richard Gregg, and his wife, Sarah, of Pennington, New Jersey, Dr. Stephen Gregg, of Atwater, California, and Patricia and her husband, Dr. David Barr, of Acton, Massachusetts. Other surviving family members include nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Irma was preceded in death by her parents: Claus and Hazel Johnson; her brother and sister-in-law, Floyd and Emma Johnson; and two nephews, David and Claus Johnson.

Warren and family would like to thank the Breakfast Club and Warren and Irma’s friends for their love and support over so many years, and the family would also like to express their deepest gratitude for the loving circle of care givers, “Gregg’s Angels”, who allowed Irma’s final days to be spent at home. Their continuous loving and tender care will always be remembered and appreciated.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 30, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Sunday, March 29, 2015, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
