December 12, 1921 - March 20, 2015Verna E. Price, age 93, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Friday, March 20, 2015, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.
Verna Edna Rothmeyer, a daughter of John and Lucy (Mattes) Rothmeyer, was born on December 12, 1921, in Decorah, Iowa. Baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Church, she attended grade school in Decorah. An only sister to six brothers, she was somewhat of a tomboy growing up. In 1939, she graduated from Carroll county school. Then, she attended beauty school in Omaha and worked briefly as a hairdresser before World War II. During the war, she worked in California for three years at Lockheed Aircraft as a riveter on wing sections of the B2 bomber.
After the war, Verna moved to Carroll, Iowa, with her daughter, Janet, from her first marriage to Edmund Proulx. In 1955, she married Norman Price, moved to Storm Lake, and was blessed with two more children, Jackie and Brian. Verna worked in the quality control department of Vilas and Company. An accomplished seamstress as well, she made clothing for her family, knitted sweaters, and crocheted afghans. With Norman, she enjoyed square dancing, camping excursions, and traveling to every state in the Union as well as Newfoundland and Mexico. She cherished her time with family and friends. A devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she will be deeply missed by all who know and loved her.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Janet (Dr. James DeMars), of Tempe, Arizona, and Brian (Connie) Price, of Cape Coral, Florida; her grandchildren: Joseph (Julia) DeMars; Shawn and Nicholas (Malissa) Jeffrey; Pauli (Angel) Escobeda; Stephanie and Taylor Price; and Sara, David, and Daniel Murad; her great grandson, Christopher Jeffrey; her brother, Bob (Rose Mary) Rothmeyer, of Bel Air, Maryland; and her sister-in-law, Letty Stender, of West Side, Iowa; as well as twenty-two nieces and nephews.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Norman; a daughter, Jackie Jeffrey; her grandson, Christopher Jeffrey; her daughter-in-law, Michele Price; an infant sister, Martha; and brothers, Clarence, Mathias, Andrew, Richard, and Walter.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Friday, March 27, 2015, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
