Charles G. Mills
November 24, 1925 - March 8, 2015

Charles George Mills was born on November 24, 1925, to Ross and Pearl (Barglof) Mills on a farm near Greenville, Iowa. He had one older brother, Raymond, and twin younger siblings Fay and Kay. He attended school in Greenville, graduating in 1943. Growing up, he was a member of the Friends Church in Greenville. While helping his father with farm chores and fieldwork, he developed an interest in a farming career. His love of outdoor activities as a youth, in turn, fostered his lifelong interest in hunting, fishing, and trapping.

Charles met Thelma Skelton during their last two years of high school. Since they lived just a few miles apart and rode the bus together, they began dating. After completing high school, Charles farmed with his father and worked with friends and neighbors. After Thelma finished her secretarial training and a couple of years of courtship, Charles and Thelma married at the Little Brown Church near Nashua in October, 1946. They rented their first farm beginning with the 1947 crop year. The next year, they began a family. In 1962 just as their fifth son was born, they had an opportunity to purchase 200 acres. They continued to pursue their dreams on that same farm for the next half century. After selling the farm in 2012, they, eventually, settled at Riverview Terrace in Spencer. On Sunday, March 8 2015, Charles passed away at St Luke’s nursing home following a brief hospital stay with pneumonia at the age of 89.

An active church member all his life, Charles served as a trustee primarily. Giving back to his community, he, also, served on the Gustafson Lake Board, the Sioux Rapids Retirement Center Building Committee, the Sioux Rapids Community School Board for nine years, and as a township representative on the local fire board.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Pearl; his brother, Raymond; and his sister, Fay Lanz; and a great grandson, Silas Mills. His survivors include his wife, Thelma, of Spencer; his sons, Dennis (Karen), of Cedar Falls, Darrel, of Winterset, Dale (Judy), of Nora Springs, Alan (Susan), of Sioux Rapids, Kevin (Sandra), of Algona, and Kay (Thelma) Mills, of Raymore, Missouri; as well as fourteen grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren who have blessed his life.
