Father John Francis Cain
February 3, 1923 - January 3, 2015

Father John Francis Cain, a son of James and Maria Murphy Cain, was born on February 3, 1923, in Oyens, Iowa. He received his early education and graduated from Moneta High School. Then, he stayed on the farm for eight years to help his father farm before continuing his education at Loras College where he earned a B.A. degree in 1952. In 1956, he graduated from Mt. Saint Bernard Seminary. Father Cain's was ordained on May 26, 1956, at the Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, Iowa. In 1977, he graduated from Drake University with a Master’s degree in Religious Leadership.

Father Cain ministered in the following communities: St. Mary's, Remsen, in 1956, Corpus Christi, Fort Dodge, from 1956 to 1963, St. John the Evangelist, Gilmore City, and St. Patrick's on the Lizard from 1963 to 1969, St. Malachy, Madrid, and St. John of God, Woodward State Hospital School, from 1969 to 1980, St. Joseph's, Wesley, from 1980 to 1986, St. Mary's, Dow City, and St. Joseph’s, Buck Grove, from 1986 to 1994. After Father Cain had retired for seven years, he ministered at St. Joseph's, Sioux Rapids, from 1999 to 2006. A 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, Father Cain served as Catholic rural Life Director of Diocese of Sioux City for twelve years and as Diocesan Girl Scout Chaplain for twenty-five years. Moreover, he, always, remained involved in farming throughout his life. He enjoyed retreats and traveling to visit friends and family. Father Cain had a great affection and gratitude for celebrating the Mass and serving the people.

Father Cain passed away on January 3, 2015, at Northshire Residence in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 91. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers: Thomas, Stephen, Father James, and Sylvester Cain.

He is survived by his three sisters: Gladys Daniels, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Sister Thecla, of Dubuque, Iowa, and Veronica Hotovec, of Sacramento, California; as well as by many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.

SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer, Father William Schreiber, officiating.

CASKET BEARERS: Dennis Kosmicki, Aaron Daniels, Keith Cain, Kevin Fifer, Brad Nair, Greg Rasch.

HONORARY CASKET BEARERS: Bob Bruggeman, Greg Hoffman, Jim Boge, John Daniels, Bernard Galm, Jim Pitts.

VISITATION: Will be from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, with a Catholic Vigil Service at 7:00 P.M. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer.

INTERMENT: North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Spencer, Iowa.
