Jane K. Carlson
October 28, 1934 - June 8, 2014

Alta, IA

Jane Katherine (Kirkholm) Carlson, a daughter of Hans Soren and Violet Viola (Sharkey) Kirkholm, was born on October 28, 1934, and passed away on June 8, 2014.

Baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith, Jane dedicated her life to serving her church, the United Methodist Church of Alta. She taught Sunday school for fifty years, directed the Junior and Cherub choirs, supervised and taught Vacation Bible School, delivered the children’s sermon during church services, and served on the Administrative Council, the UMW, the Circles, and numerous other committees.

After graduating from Alta Community High School in 1953, Jane attended Buena Vista University and graduated with a Pre-Professional Degree. She went on to teach third grade at Washta, Iowa, for six years and first/second grade at Schaller, Iowa, for one year. She also substituted in the Alta schools for twelve years.

On May 29th, 1960, Jane married Francis H. Carlson at the Alta United Methodist Church. One daughter, Colleen Jane, was born to this union on September 22, 1962. Following Fran’s discharge from the US Army, Jane became a farmwife, a capacity in which she remained until Fran retired in 2010. During this time, she also participated in other community organizations, serving as a 4-H leader for eighteen years and as a member of Nokomis Study Club.

Jane truly loved children. She adored her granddaughters, Katie and Lauren, and loved the summers when they stayed at the farm. They would spend their time baking cookies and brownies, making crafts, and playing games. Jane also had many “extra” grandkids as children immediately recognized her kindness and love for them.

When not busy elsewhere, Jane enjoyed making and giving away craft items, baking, playing the piano, playing games, reading her Bible, and taking pictures---lots of them!

She was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

Jane is survived by her husband of fifty-four years, Francis; her daughter, Colleen (David) Konop; her granddaughters, Katie (Jessie) and Lauren (Steve); her brother, Jim (Margie) Kirkholm; her brother-in-law, Howard (Betty) Carlson; and her sister-in-law, Irene Beinor; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of true and loyal friends.
