Betty J. McLaughlin, age 86, of Fonda, Iowa, died on Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Betty J. (Perkins) McLaughlin was born on November 10, 1927, to Brent and Erma (Porath) Perkins on her grandparents farm West of Varina in Buena Vista County. At first, she lived with her parents on an acreage northeast of Fonda. While still a small child, she moved to a farm East of Varina in Pocahontas County. Later, she moved to a farm in Hayes Township, South of Storm Lake, and began her education at the Hayes Township School. Her family, then, moved again, settling on a farm west of Varina in Buena Vista County. She attended the Varina Consolidated School, graduating in 1945. Following her high school graduation, she attended the Electronic Radio Institute in Omaha, Nebraska.

Next, Betty accepted a position with the Illinois Central Railroad in Fonda, Iowa, and in Myrtle, Minnesota, as a telegrapher and station operator. On June 4, 1946, she married William J. McLaughlin, Sr., at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda. After their marriage, they farmed in the Palmer, Pocahontas, and Fonda areas for many years.

They moved into Fonda in March, 1970. For the next six years, Betty worked at the Fonda Care Center as a CNA. Then, she accepted a job at the Fonda Public School in the Food Service Department where she worked for eighteen years. She retired in 1993.

A former 4-H Leader, Betty also belonged to the Holy Family Society, the Catholic Daughters of Americas, and the Iowa Past Regents Club. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those mourning her passing include her daughter, Bonnie Jean Palmer, of Fonda; her sons, Bob (Patti), of Laurens, Ron (Maralyn), of Fonda, and Bill (Kathy), also of Fonda; her grandchildren: Rob McLaughlin, of Arlington, Texas, Scott (Melanie) McLaughlin, of Mitchell, South Dakota, Courtni (Rob) Abbas, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Corey McLaughlin (fiancée, Shelby Johnston), of Pomeroy, Iowa, Jaci (Kirk) Johnson, of Newell, Iowa, Chuck Palmer (fiancée, Tiffany Ihnen), of Raymore, Missouri, Brett Palmer (fiancée, Courtney Brown), also of Raymore, Missouri, Michael (Dawn) McLaughlin, of LeMars, Iowa, Andrew (Emily) McLaughlin, of Grimes, Iowa, and Eric McLaughlin (fiancée, Rachel Lausen), of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; her great grandchildren: Jasmine, Devin, Chloe, and Lillian McLaughlin; Trevor and Brayden Johnson; Allison Palmer; Jaiden and Jordyn Davison; and MacKenzie McLaughlin; her sisters, Maxine Walters, of Windom, Minnesota, and Karen (Bob) Vaith, of Ellendale, Minnesota; her brother, Denny (Delores) Perkins, of Owatonna, Minnesota; and her sister-in-law, Joyce Perkins, of Kenmore, Washington; as well as cousins; many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband, William J. McLaughlin, Sr.; her parents, Brent and Erma Perkins; her brother, Don Perkins; her sister and brother-in-law, Bonnie and George Lusk; her brother-in-law, Cecil Walters; her mother- and father-in-law, Joe and Agnes McLaughlin; her brothers- and sisters-in-law, Francis and Dorothy McLaughlin and Vincent and Mary Catherine McLaughlin; and her sister- and brother-in-law, Francis and Loretta Harrold.

Visitation: 4:00-7:00 p.m., May 08, 2014, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda, Iowa.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m., May 09, 2014, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda, Iowa.
Vigil Service: 7:00 p.m., May 08, 2014, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Fonda, Iowa.
Interment: May 09, 2014, at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fonda, Iowa.
