Darryl E. Frantz, age 74, of Alta, passed away on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake, Iowa.

Darryl Eugene Frantz was born on August 1, 1939, to Janet E. (Thompson) and Paul Frantz in Storm Lake, Iowa. Raised on a farm south of Alta, he graduated from Alta High School in 1957. Next, he attended the University of Iowa before joining the U.S. Army.

Darryl married Janet M. Porter on June 14, 1964. They were, subsequently, blessed with three children. When they were young, Darryl enjoyed coaching their softball and little league teams. He had wonderful memories of taking his children to Disney World in Florida and of going back later with his grandchildren.

Darryl farmed until he retired in 2005. Then, he and Janet moved to town in 2011. He loved fishing, traveling, and especially volunteering as a driver for the VA. An avid gardener, he loved to share his vegetable harvest with others. A member of Trinity Lutheran Church, he sang in the church choir and served on the church board. He also sang with the Buena Vista Barber Shoppers and served on the Board of Directors of 1st Co-op. In addition, he served as a township trustee. A fifty-year member and past Master of Pomegranate Lodge #408, he had also served as past Patron of the Alta Chapter Order of Eastern Star.

Darryl was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Richard Frantz and Larry Frantz; his son-in-law, Tom Turner; and parents-in-law, Wayne and Arlene Porter.

Darryl is survived by his wife, Janet M. Frantz, of Alta, Iowa; two daughters, Jullee, and her husband, Willis Windle, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Paula Turner, and her friend, Rocky Ball, of Liberty, Missouri; one son, Scott, and his wife, DeLynn Frantz, of Early, Iowa; four grandsons, Andrew Windle, and special friend, Erin Blankers, of Lincoln, Nebraska, Matthew Windle, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Johnathan and Patrick Coburn, of Early, Iowa; his sisters-in-law, Betty Frantz Meysenburg, and her husband, Knobby, of Omaha, Nebraska, and Alberta Frantz, of Desoto, Iowa; his brother-in-law, Clayton Porter, and his wife, Janet, of Adel, Iowa; and his special cousins, David and Cathie Tilly, of Almond, North Carolina, and Marcia Neilson, of Homosassa, Florida; as well as by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation Service: Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta with a Masonic Service at 7:30 PM, Friday, May 16th, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral Service: Trinity Lutheran Church of Alta, Saturday, May 17th, 2014, at 10:30 a.m.
Burial Service: Scandinavian Cemetery of Alta with military rites conducted by the Alta VFW Post #6172, Saturday, May 17th, 2014.
