Barbara J. Kearney, age 91, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Barbara Jean DeLand, a daughter of James Lael and Mary Lurene (Swope) DeLand, was born in Storm Lake, Iowa, on November 2, 1922. She lived her youth and received her education in Storm Lake, graduating from Storm Lake High School. She furthered her education at the University of South Dakota and Buena Vista College before completing a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota.

On September 13, 1947, Barbara married Richard Kearney at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Their union was blessed with four children: Jan, Patricia, William, and Matthew. Barbara and Dick spent their married life in Storm Lake. A gifted writer and photographer, Barbara contributed to a number of local, state, and national publications. She published two books, one of them when she was 88 years old. A devoted and loving homemaker, wife, mother, and grandmother, she truly inspired both her family and friends.

A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Storm Lake, PEO, and the Iowa Poetry Association, Barbara also enjoyed gardening and collecting wildflowers from the countryside. A member of a local art club for over fifty years, she had a keen appreciation for the arts, taking a special interest in the Witter Gallery and the Storm Lake Public Library. She also loved taking pictures and watching the lake. Moreover, she will be remembered as a peace and justice activist.

Barbara’s life will always be loved, honored, and cherished by her family which includes her husband, Richard (Dick), of Storm Lake; her children: Jan Kearney, and her husband, Chuck Sabalos, of Tucson, Arizona, Patricia and Keith Moe, of Albert City, Iowa, William Kearney, and Ying Liu, of Iowa City, Iowa, and Matthew and Jamie Kearney, also of Iowa City, Iowa; her grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, Emma, Helen, and Sarah; four great grandchildren: Braylon, Cannon, Eve, and Vivian; a step-brother, Roger Kislingbury, of Dallas, Texas; her nieces, Lynn Kintigh, of Cherokee, Iowa, and Kathleen Luehring, of California; and a nephew, Tom Kearney, of California; as well as other extended family members and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Janet Huber.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 28, 2014, at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Storm Lake. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 27, 2014, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
