Edna I. Peters
October 18, 1916 - November 11, 2013

Storm Lake, Iowa

Edna Peters, age 97, of Storm Lake, died on Monday, November 11, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community following a lengthy illness.

Edna I. Lamaak was born on October 18, 1916, on a farm by the little town of Herring, Iowa, the daughter of Friedrich and Elisa (Jahnke) Lamaak. This town had a grocery store and post office in one. She began her education attending a country school about two and a half miles from home, walking to and from every day in hot or cold weather. Between her fourth and eighth grade years, her family lived in Lake View. At the age of eleven, she started working out of the home, doing both restaurant work and house work in Lake View. She, then, moved to Carroll, Iowa, where she worked for Paul Langerfelt and his wife for several years before she became engaged to Eddie Peters. Paul was a Catholic church decorator, and his wife was ill.

On April 11, 1938, Edna married Eddie Peters at the Breda Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Walters officiated. Benjamin Van Glon and Lucille Lashier witnessed the ceremony.

Following their wedding, Eddie also began working for Paul Langerfelt. Edna and Eddie went to various Catholic churches to paint and decorate. Eddie painted while Edna cooked for six men and their wives. She once worked for a month in a small cabin at Ute, Iowa. The men would eat first and then their wives. Edna took a leave from work while she was expecting Donna who was born on August 29, 1939, at grandma and grandpa’s house. Shortly afterward, Edna returned to cooking again for the gang. The crew was so glad to have Edna back they spoiled the baby.

When Donna was two and a half, the family moved to a farm two and a half miles west of Breda, Iowa. They stayed there for three years. While in Breda, Edna worked for a dairy, milking cows by hand. A milk processor in Breda would pick up the milk.

On December 26, 1944, Donnie was born in the Sac City Hospital. On April 1, 1948, Larry was born on a farm in Rembrandt. The family, then, relocated to the Rembrandt area, eventually buying a farm at Peterson, Iowa.

Edna took nurses’ aide training and worked in that capacity for one year before going into physical therapy. For several years, she made calls at various homes in Marathon, Albert City, and Storm Lake, helping stroke and hip patients. She had two families she worked with for six years before they passed away.

After she retired, Edna worked in several Storm Lake area homes taking care of the sick. Indeed, she continued doing home therapy until she turned seventy-one.

Survivors include her children: Donna Jackson, of Culpeper, Virginia, Donald Peters, and his wife, Marilyn, of Alta, Iowa, and Larry Peters, and his wife, Joleen, of Rembrandt, Iowa; eight grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren; as well as numerous other extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers: William, Harry, Hans, John, Henry, Fred, Richard, and Carl; her sisters: Anna and Ida; and her grandson, Brad Smith.
