Kathy A. Krogstad
December 30, 1948 - November 28, 2013

Newell, Iowa

Kathy A. Krogstad, age 64, of Newell, died on November 28, 2013, at the Newell Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Kathy was born on December 30, 1948, in Storm Lake to Virgil and Bonnie (Corderman) Jensen. She attended school in Newell, graduating in 1967. On December 6, 1969, she married Lynn Krogstad. For the first three years of their marriage, Lynn and Kathy lived in Storm Lake. In 1972, they moved to the Krogstad farm near Varina where they welcomed sons, Ryan, in 1974 and Chadwick, in 1977. The family lived on the farm until 1994 before moving into their current home in Newell.

After graduating from high school, Kathy attended Wayne State University for one year before returning to Storm Lake to begin her bookkeeping career at Vilas and Company. She, also, worked for First Federal Savings & Loan, the Newell Providence School District, and the Newell Coop Elevator where she spent most of her working career. At the same time, she spent her spare time teaching piano lessons to the young folks around the area, especially to her nieces.

After retiring in 2008, Lynn and Kathy spent a lot of time seeing various parts of the country, both near and far, and spending portions of their time near their sons in Texas and Wisconsin. They enjoyed trips to the Black Hills, Branson, Mexico, Arizona, and especially their trip to Alaska a couple of summers ago.

Baptized and confirmed at Nain, Kathy became an active member in the church, playing the piano for church services and during Sunday school lesson, teaching Sunday school, and serving on multiple committees. For several years, she also served as treasurer, both for the church and the Newell Women’s Golf association. She enjoyed playing bridge, golfing with the girls, book keeping, reading, playing the piano, gardening, and traveling.

Kathy especially liked her role as mother and grandmother. She particularly enjoyed spending time with her kids and grandkids as well as showing off pictures of her grandkids to her many friends. She also enjoyed buying clothes for her grandkids, especially when they were on sale. In particular, she felt she could never buy enough pajamas, a trait which earned her the relished nickname “Pajama Grandma.”

Kathy is survived by her husband of forty-four years, Lynn, of Newell; her son, Ryan, and her daughter in-law, Trisha, and their children, Halle and Tyler, of Austin, Texas; her son, Chadwick, and her daughter in-law, Michelle, and their children, Bennett and Harrison, of Madison, Wisconsin; her sister, Kolesa Kier, and her husband, Steve, of Newell; her brother, Bob Jensen and Steph, of Newell; her sister in-law, Eldona Hornor, and her husband, Duane, of Newell; and her sister-like cousin, LeDonna Gommels, and her husband, Jim, of Iowa City; as well as by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Bonnie Jensen; and her in-laws, Ine and Myrtle Krogstad.
