Kerry L. Van Houten, age 48, of Alta, passed away on Friday, November 1, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center of Storm Lake.
Kerry Lynn Van Houten was born in Battle Creek, Iowa, on February 6, 1965, to Gerald and Betty (Hauschildt) Huss. She graduated from Battle Creek High School in 1983 where she was a standout athlete in basketball, volleyball, and track. After attending the Fashion and Art Institute of Dallas at Omaha, she, then, enrolled at Wayne State, where she studied business. On August 2, 1985, she married Kerwin Van Houten at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Midway, Iowa. In 1995, Kerry, Kerwin, and their three sons moved to College Station, Texas, with VT Industries. In 1998, they returned to Iowa and settled in Alta.
A homemaker, Kerry also held various positions in all of the communities where she lived. A member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school and served as a Sunday school superintendent.
Kerry enjoyed watching her sons play football and baseball and wrestle. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, Eva and Vincent. Always supportive of her family, she loved helping them in any way she could. In her spare time, she liked playing in the adult volleyball and racquetball leagues. She also enjoyed bike riding, hiking, traveling and working in her flowerbeds and yard.
Kerry endured a two-year battle with cancer, but never lost her faith, smile, or concern for others above herself. She inspired many with her determination and will be greatly missed!
She is preceded in death by her parents and her father-in-law, LaVern Van Houten.
She is survived by her husband, Kerwin Van Houten, of Alta, Iowa; her sons, Tyler Van Houten, and his wife, Sally, of Manson, Iowa, Morgan Van Houten, and his fiancée, RaShel Woebke, of Alta, Iowa, and Garrett Van Houten, and his girlfriend, Brianna Gaes, of Alta, Iowa; two grandchildren, Vincent Van Houten, of Manson, Iowa, and Eva Van Houten, of Alta, Iowa; her brothers, Kevin, and his wife, Laurie Huss, Jon, and his wife, Lori Day, Keith Huss (Tonya Moore), Kerby, and his wife, Carrina Huss, and Korey, and his wife, Kristi Huss; and her sister, Kelly and Tom Hickey; her mother-in-law, Lola Van Houten; and Kerwin’s brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and Judy Van Houten and Marc and Cheryl Van Houten; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at 10:30 AM at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Alta with the Rev. Craig A. Cummins officiating. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery of Battle Creek. A visitation will be held on Monday, November 4, 2013, from 4:00–8:00 PM at the Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home of Alta.
