Leland LuVerne Olson, age 69, of Marathon, Iowa, passed away on Monday, October 28, 2013, at the Laurens Care Center from a long term illness.
Leland was born on September 9, 1944, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Clayton and Joyce (Jones) Olson. He attended the Albert City – Truesdale School and graduated in 1963. On June 8, 1958, he was confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church in Marathon. He had lived on the family farm near Albert City since 1950.
Leland served in the United States Army for three years before his honorable discharge in 1966. He spent his last year of service in Korea in the 7th Infantry Division. While in the service, he married Victoria Gutel on July 25, 1965. To this union, two sons, David Scott and Brian Alan, were born.
After returning from the service, Leland started his life-long career farming, which included selling seed and raising hogs in a farrow-to-finish operation. He diligently worked together with his son, Brian, for many years until his health no longer permitted.
A member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Albert City as well as the Grace Methodist Church in Spencer, Iowa, Leland served as Treasurer of the Brotherhood and Chairman of the Trustees at the Covenant Church in Albert City. He also served on the Buena Vista County Farm Bureau Board and belonged to the Albert City American Legion Post #299.
Leland enjoyed farming, landscaping, photography, and spending time with his family. He also completed many woodworking and stained glass creations for the home.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Victoria Olson, of Marathon, Iowa; his sons, D. Scott (Karin) Olson, of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and their children, Thaddeus, Theron, and Theanna Olson; and Brian (Amanda) Olson, of Laurens, Iowa, and their children, Addison, Emma, and Jayden Olson; as well as extended family and friends.
Leland was preceded in death by his parents, Clayton and Joyce Olson.
Visitation: 4:00-7:00 p.m., October 31, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Laurens, Iowa.
