Muriel Johnson
October 07, 1915 - October 15, 2013Newell, Iowa
Muriel E. Johnson, age 98, of Newell, Iowa, died on October 15, 2013, at the Pleasant View Home in Albert City, Iowa.
Muriel Nelson was born on October 7, 1915, in Scobey, Montana, a daughter of Clarence and Eliza “Liz” (Anderson) Nelson.
Growing up, she lived with her family in Whitetail, Montana, until age 8 when the family moved to Minnesota. She attended grade school in Whitetail and country school in Minnesota. In 1933, she graduated from Estherville High School in Estherville, Iowa, and started teaching country school. After teaching school for ten years, she worked in an office in Los Angeles, California, during World War II. She married Bob Johnson on July 8, 1944, in Los Angeles. She kept books for BJK as she and Bob built a business in Newell. They were blessed with two children, Kay and James “Jim”.
A member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Muriel taught Sunday school for many years. In addition, she served on the Newell Providence School Board. Because the business kept her busy, she spent any free time she had with her family.
In her spare time, Muriel loved reading, doing crossword and word search puzzles, and traveling. She treasured her family and especially loved her six grandsons. She enjoyed telling a lot of enjoyable stories about her family. She also fondly remembered volunteering at the USO in Los Angeles during World War II.
Those left to cherish her memory include her children: James (Cindy) Johnson, of Newell, Iowa, and Kay (Royden) James, of Torrington, Wyoming; her grandchildren: Travis (Maria) Johnson, of Los Angeles, California, Evan (Jill) Johnson, of Omaha, Nebraska, Scott (Melissa) James, of Wheatland, Wyoming, Trevor (Kathryn) James, of Laramie, Wyoming, Jonathan (Laura) James, of Parker, Colorado, and Corey (Shawna) James, of Casper, Wyoming; her great-grandchildren: Lily, Ava, and Carter Johnson, of Los Angeles, California, Penelope Johnson, of Omaha, Nebraska, Briley, Cole, Paige, and Brooke James, of Wheatland, Wyoming, and Tyler and Natalie James, of Parker, Colorado; and her brothers-in-law: Ken Bacon and Ed Reinmuth, special friend, Linda Stauber, of Newell, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.
Muriel was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Johnson; her parents, Clarence and “Liz” Nelson; her brother, DeWayne Nelson; her sisters: Agnes Matilla, Inez Mezyk, Doris Bacon, Rosalynde Reinmuth; and two nephews.
Memorial Service: 3:30 p.m., October 26, 2013, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Newell, Iowa. Memorial donations will be given to “Pleasant View Home” in Albert City.
