Lester "Les" Grunig, age 89, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on October 19, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.

Lester Louis Grunig was born on February 15, 1924, in Hanover, Iowa, the son of Fred and Mary (Fett) Grunig. As an infant, he was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hanover and later confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Growing up, he attended country school in Grant Township and graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1942.

On January 27, 1943, Lester enlisted in the United States Army Air Force. He, subsequently, served his country during World War II as a Corporal until his honorable discharge on February 9, 1946.

On May 18, 1947, Lester married Marlene A. Olson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. They were blessed with three children: Tom, Susan, and Mary.

A member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Lester served as an Elder and a Trustee. He also served on the Sunday school board, the finance committee, and the building committee.

A farmer and a DeKalb dealer for many years, Lester also liked cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes, especially the football team, in his spare time. In addition, he always cherished his memorable trip to Europe. Above all, however, he loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include Marlene Grunig, of Storm Lake, Iowa, his wife of sixty-six years; his children: Tom (Kristin) Grunig, of Sioux City, Iowa, Susan Miller, of Littleton, Colorado, and Mary (Terry) Parson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his grandchildren: Ben Grunig, of Arvada, Colorado, Kelly Grunig, of Sioux City, Iowa, Chad (Kelsey) Miller, of Centreville, Virginia, Sean Miller, of Littleton, Colorado, Kara (Edwin) Lorenzo, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Tyler (Melinda) Parson, of Holstein, Iowa; his great grandchildren: Alexis and Azik Lester Grunig, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Belle and Cayden Hathaway, of Sioux City, Iowa, Lina Lorenzo, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Silas and Deacon Parson, of Holstein, Iowa; his sister, Marian Kjolhede, of Storm Lake, Iowa; and his brother-in-law, Charles (Dorothy) Perrin, of Cherokee, Iowa; as well as extended family members and friends.

Lester was preceded in death by his father, Fred Grunig; his mother, Mary Grunig; his stepmother, Meta Grohe Grunig; his brother, Roy (Gladys) Grunig; his sisters: Ellen (Joe) Heun and Lorna (Ansgar) Forsberg; his brother-in-law, Arnold Kjolhede; his son-in-law, Michael Miller; his mother-in-law, Hedvig Harrison; his father-in-law, Emmanuel Olson; his stepfather-in-law, John Harrison; and his sisters-in-law: Doris (Howard) Hall, Joyce Perrin, and Arleta Cossman.

Visitation: 4:00-8:00 p.m., October 21, 2013, at the Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., October 22, 2013, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Interment: October 22, 2013, at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
