Steven James Remington
August 09, 1950 - October 12, 2013

Storm Lake, Iowa

Steven James Remington, age 63, of Storm Lake, Iowa, passed away at his home on October 12, 2013, after a long courageous battle with prostate cancer.

Steve was born on August 9, 1950, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Viola and Aziza Remington.

After his father passed away, the family moved to Waseca, Minnesota, where Steve graduated from high school in 1968. Steve earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Mankato State University in Technical Theater and held a number of positions in designing and building stages along with theater lighting design. Interested in teaching, he taught technical theater and managed the theater building at the University of Idaho. This experience led him back to Mankato where he earned an additional Master’s Degree in Business.

While he was teaching business courses at Mankato State University, he met his future wife, Sheila Hougo, whom he married at St. Mark’s Church in Saint Paul in 1986. After spending the next academic year at Winona State University, Steve and Sheila moved to Memphis, Tennessee, where he completed a PhD in Marketing from the University of Memphis in 1993.

As Steve began a seven year teaching assignment at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette and subsequently fell in love with the culture and food of Cajun heritage, he and Sheila set out on their next life’s journey. In time, however, their desire to live closer to family led Steve in 1999 to accept a position teaching Marketing at Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa. He remained there until he retired in May of 2013. An active member of the Buena Vista County Historical Society, he also helped coordinate the living histories program of Buena Vista County’s World War II veterans.

Those left to cherish his memory and continue to laugh at one of his many stories include his wife, Sheila Remington, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his brother and significant other, Mike Remington and Bridgette LaBissoniere, of St. Michael, Minnesota; his sisters, Sandy Remington, of Waseca, Minnesota, and Sharon, her husband, Rick Sandborn, of Virginia; his mother-in-law, Maureen Hougo; his brothers-in-law and their wives, Jim and Suzanne Hougo and Mike and Mel Hougo; and his nieces and nephews, Adam Spotts, and his son, Christopher; Jessica, and her husband, Dan White, and their son, Joe; and Luke, Mae, Jeffrey, Grant, Cole, and Gavin Hougo; as well as extended family and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Aziza L. Remington; his mother, Viola B. Spoors; his stepfather, Herb Spoors; and his father-in-law, Connard N. Hougo.
