Clara Lichtsinn, age 87, formerly of Storm Lake and lately of the Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, died peacefully Monday, September 16, 2013.

Clara Anna Evers was born on March 24, 1926, in Chicago, Illinois, to John L. and Clara Anna Rathke Evers. Since the family was living in Dolton, Illinois, at the time, she was baptized there at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in April 1926. In March 1930, they moved to a farm near Kewanna, Indiana. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Rochester, Indiana, in June, 1940. After graduating from Kewanna High School in 1944, She attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, majoring in social work and business.

While doing an internship at the Lutheran Child Welfare Home in Indianapolis, Indiana, Clara met her future husband, Rev. Edmund Lichtsinn. They married in Rochester, Indiana, on August 24, 1947, and were subsequently blessed with three children, Louis, Karen, and Anita. Over the course of their lives, they lived in several communities, Clovis, New Mexico, Hereford, Texas, Noblesville, Indiana, and rural Storm Lake, Iowa, before moving into town in 1988. In July 2007, they settled into the Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City, Iowa.

Clara finished her education at Buena Vista University in 1965, earning a teaching degree. During her career, she taught elementary school in Indianapolis, Indiana, rural Storm Lake, and Pomeroy, Iowa. In addition, she taught the high school Bible class at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake, and mid week classes at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake.

Clara enjoyed visiting with family, taking family vacations in Indiana, Michigan, Colorado, and Canada, gardening, canning, and reading. She found her greatest joy, however, in teaching young children.

Clara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Edmund, and her grandson, Jeff Clark. She is survived by her brother, Len Evers, and his wife, Nancy, of Rochester, Indiana; her sister, Ruth DeVries, and her husband, John, of Palo Alto, California; her brother-in-law, Robert Lichtsinn, and his wife, Marla, of Fountain View, California; her son, Louis Lichtsinn, and Vi, of Warrenton, Missouri; her daughters, Karen Clark, and her husband, John, of Cedar Rapids, and Anita Longhenry, and husband, Dennis, of Webster City; her grandchildren, Amie Clark, of Lindenwold, New Jersey, Kyle Clark, and Chris, of Cedar Rapids, Chrissi Buchanan, and her husband, Pat, of Waterloo, Kate Haisman, and husband, Tony, of Algona, Brian Lichtsinn, and Nichole, of St. Louis, and Sara Lichtsinn, of Alton, Illinois; and her great grandchildren, Chase, Samantha, Lucas, Emily, Ty, Logan, Lynnleigh, Ava, and Carly as well as by several grandnieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 20, 2013, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa. Visitation will take place on Thursday, September 19, 2013, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Storm Lake is in charge of the arrangements.
