Floyd A. Courtright, age 94, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on Thursday, August 15, 2013, at the Methodist Manor Retirement Community in Storm Lake.
Floyd was born on December 13, 1918, in Quimby, Iowa, the son of Roy and Cora (Bennett) Courtright. Baptized at the Church of Christ, he remained an active lifelong member. He graduated from Quimby High School.
On March 1, 1942, Floyd enlisted in the U.S. Army and became a radio operator. He would proudly serve his country during World War II in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines where he earned a Bronze Service Arrowhead, Philippine Liberation Ribbon with 1 Star, and a Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged on January 2, 1946.
On December 17, 1943, Floyd married Ruby Thompson in Sioux City, Iowa. This union was blessed with two children: Suzanne and Sheryl.
Floyd worked his entire career for the Iowa Electric and Power Company in Storm Lake. He started as a temporary apprentice gas serviceman in 1946 after returning home from the Army. In 1954, he became the senior office employee and in 1963 the gas foreman.
Floyd served on the Storm Lake City Council. A Kiwanis member, he also served as secretary and as a long time Golden K participant. In addition, as a devoted community volunteer active with the Senior Citizens Center in Storm Lake, he served on the Northwest Iowa Aging Board. During his younger years, he raised horses, and up into his 90s, he bowled. He also liked to fish. Nonetheless, Floyd loved and cherished his family and especially his grandchildren more than all else.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters: Suzanne (Wayne) Prunty, of Cherokee, Iowa, and Sheryl (Bill) Zinn, of Spencer, Iowa; his grandchildren: Evan and John (Melissa) Prunty, Allison (Joseph) Wallace, and Andrew and Hanna Zinn; and his great grandchildren: William, Adelyn, Olivia, Ava, Meara, and Connor; as well as extended family members and friends.
Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Cora; his wife, Ruby; and his brother, Ronald.
Visitation: 12:00 p.m., August 19, 2013, at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, Iowa. Funeral Service: 1:00 p.m., August 19, 2013, at the Church of Christ in Storm Lake, Iowa. Interment: August 19, 2013, at Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery in Storm Lake, Iowa.
