Newell, Iowa

Milton O. Brown, age 90, of Newell, Iowa, and formerly of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on August 1, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Center in Newell.

Milton Olney Brown was born on April 24, 1923, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of Milton G. and Marion (Olney) Brown. While the family resided in Philadelphia, he accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was immersed in the believer’s baptism at the Rhawnhurst Church on December 1, 1935. On January 23, 1941, he graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis.

Milt farmed with an uncle at Heron Lake, Minnesota, and took college classes until he entered the Navy on October 23, 1943. He saw active duty as a Storekeeper 2nd class, serving in Virginia, New York, Florida, California, and the South Pacific, including Australia, before he was honorably discharged on March 23, 1946.

On December 30, 1944, Milton married Nancy Winifred Webb in Richmond, Virginia. They were blessed with seven children: William, Norman, Donald, the twins, Martha and Mary, James, and Timothy.

Milton went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Minnesota on June 12, 1948, with a major in Animal Husbandry and minors in Agronomy and Ag Economics.

Milt worked as a county agent and later as a bank agricultural representative in Fairmont, Minnesota, but his long term career was as a cattle buyer for Wilson & Co., based initially in Albert Lea, Minnesota, then Marshall, Minnesota, and briefly in Hays, Kansas. He and Nancy moved to the Storm Lake area in 1975 while he was buying for John Morrell out of Cherokee. After retiring, he drove bus for the RTA and then for the Storm Lake Schools.

A dedicated member of Bethel Baptist Church in Newell, he faithfully served as choir director, song leader, deacon, and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed singing in men’s choruses and four-part harmony in quartets. He was proud to represent Iowa at the 1980 Republican National Convention in Detroit, Michigan.

Milt treasured the members of his family and enjoyed spending time with them and attending their activities. Hunting, fishing, boating, and camping were favorite pastimes. He was a fan of the Minnesota Gophers, the Twins, and the Vikings as well as of the local high school teams.

Those left to cherish his memory include his children: Bill (Sue), of Rochester, Minnesota, Don (Sherri), of Crystal, Minnesota, Jim (Becky), of Hudsonville, Michigan, Norm (Pat), of Medford, Minnesota, and Tim (Laurie) Brown, of Ames, Iowa; and Marty (Tom) Olsen, of Newell, Iowa; his grandchildren: Leslie (Karl) Anderson; Katie (Travis) Brammer; Austin, Bruce (Carolyn), Elizabeth, Eric, Kristin, Philip (Stephanie), Scott, Stephen (Sarah), and Tyler (Sarah) Brown; Sara (Scott) Kallstrand; Erica (August) Lambers; Andrea (Ben) Nelson; Kurt (Beth), Mark (Valerie), and Peter Olsen; Julia (Sean) Pruden; Allison (Corey) Samora; and Emily (Joe) Skalandis; twenty-one great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Lily Brown; as well as extended family members and friends.
