Shirley McLain Reed, age 87, of Storm Lake, Iowa, moved to her heavenly home on July 7, 2013.

Shirley Ann McLain was born December 17, 1925, in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, to Charles Arthur and Mable Awe McLain. A tomboy and daredevil as a child, she loved sledding, skating, biking, and even boxing with her brothers.

Growing up, Shirley attended school at Oak Park Academy in Nevada, Iowa, where she sang in the girls’ chorus, worked on the family dairy farm, and became a member of Alpha Rho Gamma.

In time, Shirley married Lowell Reed. They were blessed with one daughter, Jean.

A faithful member of the Faith United Assembly of God Church in Storm Lake, Shirley played an active role in the ministry, singing solos, teaching Sunday School, and participating in Bible Study.

Shirley also loved cooking and worked at Ken-a-Bob as the main chef from 1967 until it closed.

Shirley inherited a love of literature from her father. Her favorite reading topics included health, geography, and history. A nature lover, she enjoyed bird watching, gardening, and caring for her pets. She loved her Lord Jesus, her immediate family, and her church family as well. Friends and family will remember her for her generosity, selflessness, quick wit, and sense of humor among other traits. She treasured her family and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ralph, Dale, and John McLain; and three sisters, Helen Land, Jean Doland, and Irene Wendt.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Jean, and son-in-law, Dennis Ellwanger, of Sac City, Iowa; her granddaughter, Nicole Brown, of Dallas, Texas; and her grandson, Jonathan Ellwanger, of Sioux City, Iowa, as well as many other beloved extended family members and friends.
