Joseph Austin O’Malley was born on April 28, 1946, in Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Lucille (Green) O’Malley. Baptized and confirmed at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Storm Lake, he received his first Communion there and remained a lifelong member.

Growing up, Joe attended grade school at Sulpher Springs and later graduated from Storm Lake St. Mary’s High School in 1964. Next, he attended Buena Vista College, graduating with a business degree in 1969.

On June 19, 1971, Joe married Judy Marie Peters at St. Patrick’s Church in O’Neill, Nebraska. They were blessed with six children: Mary Ann, Jean, Tim, Megan, Ann, and Bridget.

Joe was the owner and operator of O’Malley’s Soft Water in Storm Lake for many years. A dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, he cherished making memories with his family and enjoyed interacting with his grandchildren.

His morning routine included going to the Hamilton Law Firm to check in with the boys, stopping by Seiler’s Plumbing for donuts and to check in with more boys, and then returning home to check in with Judy, and doing an occasional “bearcat” of a job.

Joe enjoyed going to the flea market in Okoboji and Chevy Dealerships, especially Fitzpatrick’s. He often went to his office, aka Puffs. An avid sports fan, he loved Notre Dame Football and Chicago Cubs Baseball. He also enjoyed attending Storm Lake and Buena Vista ballgames. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Judy O’Malley, of Storm Lake, Iowa; his children: Mary Ann O’Malley, of Aurelia, Iowa, Jean (Jamie) Knapp, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Tim (Deb) O’Malley, of Clay, New York, Megan (Matt) Richardson, of Storm Lake, Iowa, Ann (Danay) Bouaphakeo, of Bennington, Nebraska, and Bridget (Ben) Skibsted, of Zumbro Falls, Minnesota; his grandchildren: Emily, Grace, and Ellie DePuma, of Aurelia, Iowa; Michael, Austin and Natalie Knapp, of Storm Lake, Iowa; Katherine and Abigail O’Malley, of Clay, New York; Luke, Cole, and Emma Richardson, of Storm Lake, Iowa; Ben and Ty Bouaphakeo, of Bennington, Nebraska; and Madelyn and Lucy Skibsted, of Zumbro Falls, Minnesota; and his sister, Mary Ann (Jim) Black, of Ames, Iowa; as well as extended family members and many friends.
