Joyce Ann Janning, age 85, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on June 25, 2013, at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake.

Joyce Ann Shultz Beeghley was born on November 4, 1927, in Newell, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence and Laura (Mortensen) Shultz. She was baptized at the Congregational Church in Newell.

As a child, she attended 1st and 2nd grade in Newell. Then, her family moved to Juniata, Iowa, where she attended 3rd grade at a country school. Next, she attended Providence Consolidated School in Sulphur Springs from the 4th through the 12th grades, graduating in May of 1945. While in school, she participated in band, vocal music, and basketball.

On September 5, 1945, she entered Cadet Nursing at St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated on August 24, 1948, with a Registered Nursing Degree.

She started working at the Porath Hospital in Storm Lake on January 2, 1949. After it closed, she went to work at the Buena Vista County Hospital (BVRMC) when it opened on March 11, 1951. That same year, she moved to Des Moines where she worked in the Surgery Department at Iowa Lutheran Hospital.

On May 29, 1953, Joyce married Glenn (Bud) Beeghley in Jackson, Minnesota. To this union, three children were born: Steven, Jan, and Scott.

Glenn passed away on February 12, 1965, and the family, then, moved to Storm Lake on July 29, 1965. Joyce returned to Nursing with the Surgical Department at the Buena Vista County Hospital until September of 1976. In October of 1976, she began working as a nurse at the Methodist Manor in Storm Lake where she remained until she retired on November 30, 1996.

Joyce was a member of the United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. For many years, she served on the Nursing Scholarship Committee. She also belonged to the “Hasbeens,” a group of former hospital employees. In 1988, the Business Professional Women bestowed on her the honor of “Woman of the Year.”

In her spare time, Joyce enjoyed reading, doing crafts, playing cards, and dancing at the cobblestone. Very talented at making baby sweaters, she knitted hundreds of them for church missions. She also loved watching sporting events in person or on television, especially those of the Chicago Cubs.

Joyce very much valued her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children: Steven (Beth) Beeghley, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Jan (Ed) Dowdy, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Scott (Amy) Beeghley, of Indianola, Iowa; her grandchildren: Michael (Melissa) Meyer, of Des Moines, Iowa, Michelle (Nick) Tjaden, of Chaska, Minnesota, Stephanie Beeghley, of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Sara Dowdy, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, Chad Dowdy, of Rembrandt, Iowa, and Hannah Beeghley, of Indianola, Iowa; three great grandchildren: Izaak and Brynlee Meyer and Trice Tjaden; one niece; three nephews; three cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
