October 29, 1942 - April 23, 2013Larry Sundblad, age 70, of Sioux Rapids, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at the Sioux Care Center in Sioux Rapids.
Larry Edward Sundblad, the son of George and June M. (Bergling) Sundblad, was born in Sioux Rapids, Iowa, on October 29, 1942. He lived his youth and received his education in Sioux Rapids, graduating in 1960 from Sioux Rapids High School. He, then, attended the Universal Trade School in Omaha. Before he married, he worked for Ryan Grain and the Art Middendorf Well Company.
On February 6, 1965, Larry married Mary Mills at the Riverside Church in Linn Grove, Iowa. They were subsequently blessed with three children: Steve, Greg, and Lynn. Together, Larry and Mary farmed in the Sioux Rapids area. A partner in the family trucking business, Larry also fed cattle on his farm. Although he and Mary moved into Sioux Rapids in February of 2004, he never retired from the work he loved the most—farming. Even last fall during his twenty-one month battle with brain cancer, he still enjoyed helping with the farming operations and harvesting the crops.
A member of the Riverside Evangelical Free Church of Linn Grove, Larry served as an elder. His faith served as a testimony to all who knew him. Indeed, he touched the lives of many people through Via de Cristo, Lay Renewal and Lay Witness Mission, Bible Study groups, and Promise Keepers. Involved in the activities of the Sioux Rapids community, he served on the school board for eleven years. A car enthusiast, he enjoyed traveling. He also loved spending time with his family, especially with his grandchildren who were the light of his life.
Larry’s family will always cherish his life and memory. They include his wife of forty-eight years, Mary, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa; his children: Steve and Wanda Sundblad, of Spencer, Iowa, Greg and Wendy Sundblad, of Sioux Rapids, Iowa, and Lynn and Wade Withers, of Linn Grove, Iowa; his grandchildren: Andy, Nicholas, Sydney, Justin, and Preston Sundblad and Makenna Withers; his sister, Margene (Larry) Smith, of Alcester, South Dakota; and his sister-in-law, Jan Mills; as well as other extended family members and his many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers-in-law: Jay Mills and Jim Mills and his wife, Carolyn Carder.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, April 26, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Rapids with the family present the entire time to greet friends. The Sliefert Funeral Home in Sioux Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.
