Storm Lake, Iowa

William "Bill" Lullmann, age 90, of Storm Lake, Iowa, died on April 19, 2013, at his home in Storm Lake.

William Fred (Wilhelm Fritz) Lullmann was born on December 29, 1922, to Henry (Heinrich Friedrich) and Louise (Ehefran Louise) Boettcher Lullmann, at their family farm in Grant Township, Buena Vista County, near Storm Lake, Iowa. On January 21, 1923, William was baptized into the Christian faith, with Pastor F. Albrect officiating at Zion Lutheran Church, rural Storm Lake, Iowa. On May 21, 1937, William affirmed his faith and was confirmed by Pastor Wm. Sehuelke, thereby becoming a member of Zion Lutheran.

Bill received his schooling at rural Zion Lutheran Grade School. During his youth, he was either walking or riding his pony to school and helping his parents on the family farm. With his father in the trucking and corn shelling business, he soon followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a lifelong truck driver hauling many loads of livestock and grain for area farmers. For twenty-two years, he was a contract carrier for Kent Feeds. At age 62, however, he sold his feed trucks and retired. Then, he worked part-time as a truck driver for Bil-Mar Foods and Norm’s Livestock, hauling live turkeys into the plant from Iowa and the surrounding states of Missouri, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Illinois.

William first served his Lord through Zion Lutheran Church. He helped build the new church, hauling the new pews with his truck from Wisconsin. Later, he became a member of St. John’s before transferring to Grace Lutheran Church where he ushered for many years.

On May 9, 1954, Bill married Marjorie Splitgerber Johnson, thereby acquiring a step-son, Wesley Johnson. They made their home in Storm Lake, Iowa. In time, however, this marriage was dissolved.

On March 9, 1981, he married Merna Jean Hardyman at the Minnehaha County Courthouse in Sioux Fall, South Dakota.

Bill loved polka music and attended many polka fests. He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and traveling. Family and friends will remember him for his friendliness, generosity, and willingness to help others. A faithful and giving husband and a loving outgoing father to his step-sons and their families, he dearly loved his grandchildren as well.

Those left to cherish Bill’s memory include his wife, Merna Lullmann; his step-sons: Wesley Johnson, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Jerry (Barbara) and Jeffrey Weinzetl, both of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Joel Weinzetl, of Cook, Nebraska; thirteen grandchildren: Wesley Johnson, Jr., Shauna, Tony, Aaron, Jessica, Ryan, Shannon, Brandi, Joel, Jr., Andrew, Nicholas, Frances, and Anna Weinzetl; two sisters, ,Laura (Marvin) Bumann and Lilly Cornell; and a sister-in-law, Maxine Lullmann, of Storm Lake; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Preceding Bill in death were his parents, Henry and Louise Lullmann; four brothers: George (in infancy), Dietrich, Henry, Jr., and Walter Lullmann; one sister-in-law, Beulah Lullmann; and his father- and mother-in-law, Elston and Merna Kinney, of Perry, Iowa.
